But I also don't think being free from bigotry is necessarily a requirement. A world can still be queernormative (IMO) if it accepts some forms of queerness completely but struggles with others, or if it's pitted against other groups/societies where queerness is less normal.

Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Closer to the latter. To me, queernormative worlds are ones where a whole bunch of people are (what we would think of as) queer but also nobody comments on it or views it as being different in any way from "normal." The Preservation society from the Murderbot books is a good example.

All I'm going to say is I've been watching a lot of James Bond movies lately, so this strategy of "Give us a trillion dollars so our product doesn't destroy humanity!" feels, shall we say, familiar

Thanks! Ugh, everyone I know in academia (and most people outside academia, for that matter) is just so burned out right now and constantly on the edge of a breakdown. I don't know what this year is going to be like.

Stories I Read In the Sun
Summer is a weird time, both in publishing and in academia. Structure dissolves. Everyone’s off traveling, either for personal reasons or for urgent work...

Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Oof, I don't know - but like, other folks were doing other types of Lovecraft subversion around that time, so maybe wave vaguely at some of them and then at something else defiantly Black and go "X meets Y"? What I really wish is that the marketing people could just. Do this for us :P

Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
So I feel like the people who say this are people who've had too many weird interactions with, y'know, That Dude. The one who thinks all the good SFF was published in the 1960s (by white cishet dudes). Nobody wants to be that dude! But then they take it a little too far in the other direction.
110
Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I wonder if this is one of the things where like... our literal thinking style gets in the way. Like we're over here wringing our hands because no one book is ever exactly like any other and the NTs are sitting there like "my dudes, your book has dragons, just tell me another book that has dragons"
110
Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
AHAHA okay I didn't see that

Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
And to be clear I do read things that are that recent with reasonable regularity, but it is just probably not the bulk of what I read.
010
Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I also feel that it is an unreasonable demand but I am shy about saying so because I have seen other authors say with their whole chest that *of course* you have to be constantly reading books from the last 3-5 years to be a real author, how are you going to write anything relevant if you don't 🫠

Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Ideally, with older influences like King or Lovecraft, there have been enough people doing their own versions of those tropes throughout the years that you can just point to whoever did each one most recently and hope the resulting jumble makes sense, but still
110
Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Yeah! And then the marketing person is like "it needs to be within the last 3-5 years" and you're like "I started writing this more than 3-5 years ago, what do you want from me"
110
Ada Hoffmann @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I would love for someone with power to finally look these people in the eye and say "Oh, okay, in that case, we agree to intervene. By dissolving all your companies immediately. Bye"

Just absolutely wild to see so many people discovering the massive influence of the rationalists in real time and say things like "I wish I could unlearn what I've learned in the last 24 hours." I, and others, have been researching these people for YEARS. There is so much I wish I could unlearn.

Anyone want to rec a SFF book/story that depicts a process of restorative justice (or any of the other types of non-carceral justice) actually working? Especially if the world of the book is built such that restorative justice processes are the norm (as opposed to a new, controversial thing)

Usually people is like "don't have the characters just say how they feel! real people don't talk that way!" and I say they have never met an autistic person HOWEVER I am now discovering that if you do let them be reluctant to say how they feel then this can make a scene 10x more delightfully awkward

I think she (using the pronoun advisedly b/c I was an egg back then) would be very impressed by most of it, somewhat disappointed by other parts, but also just... baffled. Like, by 20 y/o me's standards, my 38 y/o life is just so weird and outré.

*counting on fingers* But if we count THAT then we need to also count Ev for [spoilers redacted from book one] even though we don't literally watch her put that into motion and- Okay I need to get off Bluesky for the night and stop overthinking

The 😉version is... um... I'm not even sure if I have a published novel yet where anyone's score is above 0. But does it count if I wrote a totally unpublishable, fanficcy sequel to IGNORE that talks about all the women Rowan dated while he and Kelli weren't talking? Because. It's a lot of women

To my own chagrin I think the highest body count 🔪 is Yasira Shien from THE OUTSIDE, who makes a snap decision early on in the series to let about a hundred people die so that a few hundred more can escape. Other characters are responsible for more death, but we don't actually watch them do it.

Right. A lot of this "safety testing" consists of turning off the guardrails and asking "okay, so if we tell this sycophantic AI that we are kinda expecting it to act like the evil AI in the stolen books, will it do that?" and then of course it does
