This is a perfect demonstration of why Marsha Blackburn won't debate Jerri Green in Tennessee.

Maine is one of those states that I've never been to, never lived close to, and is just phenomenally quirky, so I hesitate to speculate what is going on there. But if this were a state I nominally understand -- like say, Texas or Virginia -- I would say it's incredibly Joever for Susan Collins.

The 2024 election was now 23 months ago. What exactly are they hoping to accomplish here, besides sow FUD about the election process, and attract attention to themselves? It's getting downright Trumpian at this point.

The whole discourse around birthright citizenship is indicative. The anti- argument almost always boils down to "we don't want those people getting our free stuff," with a dash of arglebargle about "culture." Citizenship these days seems to be about entitlement, not about obligation or belonging.

“This is a job interview. I’m just the only one showing up for it:” Democrat Jerri Green is hosting a series of empty podium town halls across Tennessee as U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn refuses to debate other candidates for governor. wpln.org/post/as-blac...

It was standing-room only in the ballroom of a Brentwood hotel as hundreds of people packed in to see Democratic Memphis City Council member Jerri Green

Not in Texas but this comes across to me as cult stuff. At the very least forgetting that what plays in a county Republican Party meeting doesn't play with the general public. Not even in a red state.

I was just thinking last night that this year has some really strong 2008 vibes. The GOP has screwed up really badly and lost really hugely. They were basically doomed after 11/2008 until they invented the Tea Party out of pure copium. It's possible 2026-28 is going to spiritually break them.

I have a strong feeling that, in addition to having a FOX News-level bias, Newsweek also pays its journalists by the word. Because I swear I see articles that look just the same as other articles from a week before. Not to mention every breathless report on a presidential approval poll.

I should say I am not practicing law in Tennessee, so rarely see our judges in court. But I am chair of the county Democratic Party, and I really hate having to deal with judicial elections, because I think it's kinda bad that they are even being voted on.

Appellate courts are inherently more political, I think, but Tennessee decided to make them the most shielded from ordinary politics (only one Tennessee supreme court justice has ever lost a retention election in living memory). Whereas trial courts are mostly apolitical, but are partisan in TN.

I briefly practiced law in Galveston County. Moved to Tennessee. The trial judges here are elected on a partisan basis and the appellate judges here are appointed and then up for retention elections, which are nominally non-partisan. Not sure which system I prefer.

"Pathway to citizenship" is broadly popular nationally, so I am not saying Texas is exceptionally pro-immigration, but I do think Texas is squarely in the mainstream of national, public opinion.
000
James Dallas @ad5nl.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Was Texas ever really anti-immigration though? May lean MAGA on other stuff (economics), but most Texans personally know immigrants. There's a fair bit of evidence that the most anti-immigrant voters are the ones who don't know any. Anyway, I think public opinion in Texas is nuanced.
