It’s weird to me seeing this album referred to as early Bruce. I think of it as late Bruce. To me anything before Born to Run is early Bruce. (Greetings from Asbury Park / Wild, Innocent). Anything after Darkness on the Edge of Town is late Bruce. I think I’m old. Or at least late.

Indeed! And during the pandemic it helped me know when it was cocktail o’clock. Then we’d watch the sunset, and the next call meant it was time to go to dinner. The hardest part was getting used to sleeping thru the Fajr prayers.

More pointedly —he’s doing it BECAUSE of their opposition to him. He cannot rely on them to report his successes and it’s likely they will seek out negative angles. He needs to have a positive narrative early though to succeed. So this is his way to end-run them. They see that it’s a threat.
