Maybe an interesting twist, but the Ithaca Journal is a Gannett/USA Today paper, and the company has pared down the staff to nearly nothing, relying on this "network" approach to reporting. They've done this in upstate NY and many other areas, I believe.

“You can say and do things at universities that you cannot do anywhere else,” he said. “So the notion that universities are a problem when it comes to free speech is just a lie.”
