Social media companies should consider the U.S. government's motives, EFF’s @davidgreene.bsky.social told @cbsnews.com. "This seems to be the government wanting to broadcast the execution for propaganda purposes and wanting to glorify its ability to execute people.”

Will social media platforms allow Fort Hood shooter's execution to be livestreamed? Here's what their policies say.
The Pentagon's decision to livestream the firing-squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan could put the spotlight on whether social media companies will allow videos on their platforms.

Today's World News Day. It's also the start of @bhamwatch.bsky.social's twelfth year of operations. There's much to celebrate + reasons for concern, so I decided to share some thoughts and make the case for why you should #choosetrustedjournalism — today and every day.

An update from last week (and even from when this graphic was made): we've received $4,058 in donations and pledges so far — THANK YOU!
Grey text on a yellow background, saying, "Thanks for $3,558 in support so far, Birmingham! Donate today to help power journalism for the City Built to Change the South." The logo for BirminghamWatch, a silhouette of the city's skyline, sits in the middle of the image.

At the end of the day, we'll be in fundraising mode for the rest of the year, working to secure funds to produce work at least through the first quarter of next year (if not more). Thanks to all who've given so far ($2,325—!!!— in new funding since the original post).

I'll also point out that while this isn't ideal, it's a much messier space for everyone right now (especially in this instance) than anything else.

We also didn't plan to have a link at the top of the page, as it is the first week of publishing partner WBHM's fall drive. We do hope that the planned release of a collaborative project next week gives us a chance to raise more awareness about our effort

That campaign was always meant to be in addition to the end-of-year funds, giving us a chance to stretch and pull off what was possible. The plan was to switch the link to that of our fall election voter guide. (The guide's currently delayed.)

A follow-up from yesterday - THANK YOU! I'll also clear up a couple of things: The banner that was at the top of our website was from the end of our summer campaign. It wrapped up the day before we were updated. I was so tired that I didn't take it down until this morning.

That said, I can’t put off paying myself or others any longer, as hope keeps fading away. It's still there, though, working toward making sure we can keep working. Hopefully.

The stress has resulted in some health issues. I'm happy I couldn't put off going in to find out what was wrong for much longer, and I'm happy they've appeared to have figured out a diagnosis and a plan to get me as close to normal as I've probably been in the last six years.

André Natta @acnatta.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
The stress of maintaining an organization where most people start a statement to me with, "So why don't you do..." is a lot. In most cases, I know asking anything about their support for our operations would be pointless. But I still need to ask since it’s the most important part of what I do.

My deferral pales in comparison to our founder, Carol Nunnelley, who never took a salary while serving in the role and regularly contributed 20% or more of our budget. That said, it's still stressful.

Yes, this is true. Yes, I'm stressed. Yes, we're going to see what happens. Yes, I’ve deferred compensation for the last three months, assuming we'd be receiving this funding.

In case you forgot, there's a special congressional primary being held in Alabama next week. I recently sat down with the fine folks at WBHM to discuss it and the voter guide @bhamwatch.bsky.social produced in advance of it. (If nothing else, it is a rare audio appearance by yours truly.)

Yesterday was a battle with some… difficult vines and whatnot attempting to keep the other plants from enjoying their space (and a lot of cutting back of hydrangea elsewhere in the property). The hat wave shows a lot of this down for the next few days. It's a great stress reliever though…

Both totally unnecessary and extremely funny that the Guardian has an interactive graphic for you to change the color of the US flag's blue to the color of the Reflecting Pool from 8 to 19 June and counting
Screenshot of the article's graphic, showing color swatches derived from the Earthcam archive, illustration the color of the reflecting pool calibrated against satellite imagery, from 8 June to 19 June 2026. I chose yesterday, 19 June, so it rendered the US American flag with a green hue instead of blue.
