However, Floridians have been fighting back. Last week Wednesday, Floridians banded together during city commission meetings to make their voices heard. Together, we got 2 big wins. Tallahassee and Miami Beach both refused to bend to this anti-diversity law.

For example, we requested public records that show Leon County and Fort Myers have already terminated programs designed to support minority and women owned businesses, Jacksonville has changed their grant application guidelines, and Largo ended its Inclusive Workplace Committee.

ACLU of Florida @aclufl.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The thing is, the law's restrictions are vague and some cities and counties have been cornered into complying early based on their fear of retaliation from the governor's office.

Surveillance cameras used by law enforcement have been greeted with distrust across the political spectrum. With little reassurances from some police agencies, that distrust is warranted.

The court didn't mince words: "For at least sixty years, the standard has been the same: student speech cannot be curtailed unless it materially disrupts the educational mission or involves substantial disorder or invasion of the rights of others."

Students Sue Florida International University for Violating their Right to Protest - ACLU of Florida
Lawsuit was filed in response to the university’s disciplinary action against seven students who silently protested the university’s 287(g) agreement while wearing “ICE OFF FIU” t-shirts

ACLU of Florida @aclufl.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
Florida's colleges and universities are meant to be places for debate, disagreement, and discussion. Students have every right to express themselves — and no campus conduct policy turns a university into a protest-free zone. We'll see FIU in court.
1262
ACLU of Florida @aclufl.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
The Constitution is clear: public universities can't discipline students for non-disruptive expression. Their protest to the university's 287(g) agreement is protected speech — even if FIU doesn't like the message. Using an overly broad rule against organized students is unlawful censorship.
1253
ACLU of Florida @aclufl.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
FIU charged all seven with misconduct, citing a policy that bans nearly all "expressive activity" inside university buildings — even speech protected by the First Amendment. They got punished with written reprimands and were ordered to submit videos affirming they'll comply.
