Totally agree with you. Out-of-the-box use of libraries and packages has had a deleterious effect on our understand of the inverse problem. In jest, I am sure if we did a meta study, we would find VOT based studies and other features following a Zipfian distribution.

Indranil Dutta @academicmargin.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Would be so much more informative. Simple question for the VOT(ers): How is a feature whose magnitude is a function of place of articulation, a feature for laryngeal contrasts? The use of VOT has been perpetuated because we imagine a world where 2-way laryngeal contrast languages determine theory.

#phoneticians, could we please have a moratorium on studies reporting on #VOT? Pretty, please with sugar on top! Just because #VOT is easy to measure doesn't mean we should measure it...

Mermelstein (1967); Schroeder (1967) provided ways of estimating the vocal tract transfer transfer function from tube models by looking into the anti-symmetric Fourier coefficients of the formants for open-close tubes. 50 years hence, our most important contribution is everyone measuring #VOT 🤦

Just the place (syntax) where we would like there to be greater cooperation, right? For having dominated mainstream linguistics for this long, one would think there would have been collaborations across #manylanguages in syntax.

Coming soon: Big Team Science in the Language Science, our take on BTS in a field that, at its core, theoretically cares for cross-cultural differences. We at @manylanguagesc.bsky.social are working on a few BTS projects and yes, BTS in linguistics is really difficult. zenodo.org/records/2214...

Big Team Science for language science: opportunities and challenges
Abstract: The present paper advocates for incorporating Big Team Science practices into the language sciences. Big Team Science is a promising mode of collaborative research in which top-down coordination directs efforts by a large number of researchers from different institutions towards a common scientific goal. The redistribution of resources and division of labor enabled by Big Team Science may enable researchers to increase methodological rigor, systematically explore claims across a wider sample of languages, and to diversify both the languages studied and the researchers engaged. However, implementing Big Team Science practices is not without challenges, some of which are unique to the language sciences. We suggest strategies and best practices for adapting to these challenges, including theoretical and methodological pluralism, variation in conditions among data collection sites, and navigating a trade-off between maximizing methodological rigor and ability to engage with the most inclusive, typologically broad language samples.

Never understood the logic of prevoicing.Only makes sense if our perspective on voicing comes from languages with 2-way contrasts. Arguably, the burst is the vantage point for laryngeal contrasts. This could easily be amended if 4-way laryngeal contrasts provided the perspective. #phonetics #voicing

Take #ecrs away from what could be truly impactful work. Working with frameworks such as #Manylanguages @manylanguagesc.bsky.social then seems like a deterrant to achieving professional goals.

In the classical frame, institutions in their desire to competitively indulge in this spurious one-upmanship are a major obstacle to progress in #bigteamscience and #science in general. Instead of nurturing the careers of #ecrs, what requirements such as "which author are you" tend to do is:

One of the major extrinsic hurdles to increasing outreach for @manylanguagesc.bsky.social has been structural and institutional requirements for potential collaborators to be `first authors' and/or 'last authors' for them to even be considered candidates for positions. <long rant coming>

The difficulty of measuring #intensity and the ease of measuring #duration perhaps is the reason why so many contrasts rely heavily on #duration, despite its infeasibility as a stable cue across contexts #unpopularopinion

Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

Thanks so much for these references. Really helpful. Do you think it is plausible that this face = acoustics relationship could be gradient? Within caucasian faces, is it possible to think about difference in perceptibility if one is to create instances of faces that are kinda mixed?

Is it just me? Or do we all hate out-of-office (ooo) mails? Emails are impersonal, ooo mails are the epitome of that. It is saying, "I don't care who you are but hey, I am not here. I will be. At some point of time. But not now." Academics, be mindful that your ooo mail lands in students inbox also.
