I have searched everywhere. Does anyone know what happened to Kahoot's Array Lab? It was the best and now it doesn't seem to be anywhere in Kahoot or on Dragonbox. @berkeleyeverett.bsky.social #iTeachMath

So I did a thing...Kudos to anyone who does podcasts regularly. I am always learning and growing so it feels vulnerable to have recorded my thoughts and feelings on this topic. Hope you enjoy it!

This is the clearest, most relatable visual of explore, refine, apply. I'm going to start using this with teachers. Also, half a sucker? No need to ask. IYKYK 😂

@joelbezaire.bsky.social Just discovering your Sports Analytics collection in Desmos. Digging in now but since I'm not super sporty, 1. Are these activities still relevant? 2. Do they need to be done in order or could students pick what interests them?

NEW: Decimal Square. mathsbot.com/tools/decima... Thanks to @joausten.bsky.social for the idea in his #MathsConf37 session. I've got a few more features I'd like to add to this, but I'm way too tired after the weekend!
A square split into 1000 smaller rectangles with 134 of them shaded to represent the decimal 0.134.

Great context. Exploring usage and how it accelerates battery use would be interesting to compare too. Which apps use more? At what rate? What does it look like on a graph? Love it!

It's the outside work hours that's the key. Otherwise teachers will feel obligated and admin might expect prompt responses to things at all hours. There are so many comments made about teachers and schools from people who think they are like the private sector. So frustrating.

Can't wait to start watching them. The most misunderstood SMP is modeling. Because we use the word model to mean different things it gets a little blurry. And the plethora of posters online that have it wrong do not help.

The future is unwritten. You get to help shape it. So what do you want it to look like? Move in that direction. Welcome friends to join you along the way. Even if they’re “late”. Even if you don’t agree on everything. If you can agree on a vision of the future together, they’re your people.

How many? (Before and after.) #UnitChat
A white plastic tray with several eggs in it. The back row has five eggs. The next row of eggs each fit between the eggs in the back row. The next row of eggs each fit between the eggs in the previous row. At the left-hand end of the middle row of eggs, and on both ends of the front row of eggs is an empty hole where an egg could sit.The same tray from the previous picture, but some of the eggs are missing. Now the back row has only three eggs. The next row still fit in the gaps between the back row’s eggs. There are no eggs in the front row.

This is a great example of subtraction as difference! ❤️ It is an overlooked skill as we work towards non counting strategies. Most middle schoolers solve subtraction with addition or take away thinking. Then we get to slope in 8th grade and it all breaks down.

When you say "justify" do you mean explaining how they got to the wrong answer as if they thought it were correct, like a common mistake and what was the person thinking. Or that they have to explain why it's wrong. I love both ideas. Curious what you have done.

From a MS perspective I would say that understanding the number relationships is more important than being able to get an answer to a computation (because they will forget the things they don't actually understand)

I would add n-tiles to that list too. You will know what I mean but others won't. Once I understood how to use them they are amazing at building multiplicative (and division) reasoning.

I think to use a tool strategically means a student unprompted chose a tool to help them solve or reason through a problem. Yes I can rotate in my head, but patty paper helps me see it better. Drawing a double number line to help understand the parts of a % problem.

Cuisenaire rods are my favorite and usually overlooked in grades 5-8. They connect to bar models and number lines. They don't have numbers on them so they can be anything.

I absolutely agree with this. And yes I am a math coach. Currently my role is more of an advocate for teachers and students. So everything you are voicing is what I would be mediating in my schools to make sure no teacher was treated this way.

We cannot dismiss teachers perspective and professional opinion, but we also have to recognized that there are well intentioned teacher moves that do not benefit students.

Admin can feel justified in their actions because they believe they are implementing best practice even when they are not. I live in the world between teachers and admin. It gives me a different perspective. I interpreted the statement as teachers will fall back on direct instruction and lecture.

I did not read it with that tone, but as I reread it it occurs to me that everyone is reading through the lens of their experiences. If they have felt coerced in the past that tone could come through. I think it speaks to they way admin can use the same words to mean very different things.

This has me thinking about an 8th grade problem we just did about songs and albums and the cost. Students were getting confused because the table of numbers was different than they were used to. 30+0=15. 22+1=15 (number if songs and albums = $15) Love the connection to SMP2

This really perpetuates the problems we have been trying to shift away from in math instruction. And is going to mask students' foundational gaps. We will have to be more vigilant and purposeful in the data we gather on students to inform our instruction.

I think that concrete model into decimals is a great exploration to generalize what happens in our base 10 system and then to extend it to other bases. Love it. I also think exploring different ways to deal with the remainder, fraction, decimal, when to round, always round up, truncate, etc
