An excerpt from S.E.L.F.'s upcoming series, Cinnamon & Smoke. It reads:

Hera impatiently tapped her sleek, black claws against the obsidian counter where she leaned down. “S’veryn, darling…certainly there must be some agreement that we can come to?”

The stately, long-horned devil tipped his head back, eyes closed, mouthing numbers to himself under his breath from behind the counter as she spoke, “…fourteen-trillion, eleven-thousand, six, eighteen-hundred and five-billion…”

He rapidly clicked a small, golden device in his left hand, which corresponded to the shifting numbers that flickered across the large, stygian apparatus between the two of them. Scales and weights, hourglasses of all sizes, vials of ink, spools of thin golden thread, and countless other utensils and contraptions sat scattered neatly all around him, in an ineffably organized chaos.
She bent over further, almost spilling out of her dress as she looked up at him. She lowered herself before S’veryn and spread the fingers of both hands out in front of her as she pouted up at him.

“My esteemed companion –”

“The counter,” he interrupted her, glancing down at her suggestive display from the corner of his eye. “…hands off. It’s sensitive.” He waved his right hand in a shooing motion toward her, before returning to his murmurings. “…ninety-nine, three-hundred fifty-four, eighty-one thousand…”

When she stood upright, she was almost twice his height. She towered over him, hands on her hips, and continued, “Surely one, tiny, little soul could…slip through the cracks? Hm? Just one?”
