I was chatting with colleagues the other day about why more nurses don’t publish. There were lots of very relevant reasons, but the one we came to a universal agreement on is ££££. With it costing between £2K and £3K to publish in a medical journal, how many nurses can afford it.

I always have more than one book on the go, one for pleasure and one more work related. The Dressmaker's Mirror by Susan Weiss Liebman falls in the latter category. That said, it is a really interesting read about #genetics #cardiomyopathy and the impact on a family.

I've just re-read William Golding's Lord of the Flies for the first time in 40 years. I first read it in high school; didn't we all during the 70s and 80s in the UK. Absolutely brilliant. A classic that truly deserves the label.

Just starting Michael Arditti's The Anointed. Described in one review as "#MeToo meets the Old Testament". This might be a bit strong, but knowing Arditti's work and knowing that this tells the story of David, Michal, Abigail, and Bathsheeba, it could be incendiary.

For a polling organisation #Yougov is really bad at writing questions in a non biased manner. This one came back and kicked them where it hurts however as 44% of the respondents went for PR. Their Tory paymasters are not going to be happy.

One of the things that annoys me with research and academia is the fetishisation of the new. Sometimes we need to look back so we don’t repeat the same mistakes of the past. Stephens' paper show how unequal power dynamics mean ethical research is more than just the giving and recieving of consent
