The land wears gold instead of green. We walk through October knowing it ends in the season of the dead. Everywhere an echoing back of bone omens, cardboard masks, mangle lanterns. Even the patisseries and fancy bakers of Weychester make folkloric nods in their displays of delight. – Dr. M. Benn

The two most important things I learned as part of my English Literature A-level were a fondness for Keats and a healthy distaste for Chaucer.

That's now twice in four days I've had to become "stern" when faced with customer service which is impolite or incompetent. Lads, I don't like having to be in that head space. Stop making it necessary before I start to pronounce maledictions on your firms.

So, we spent a few days in London and while the rest of the family group were at their event I was free to wander. This is the first place I wandered to. Can you guess what I was doing?

Me, moving from a beer garden to sit inside, stopped by a young man from a group, the rest of whom are watching. Him: Excuse me, do I know you? Me: I don't think we've met, no. Him: No, that's not what I mean. Do I know who you are? Me, with a smile: Well if you work it out I'll be inside. Bless.

I remember walking home from Infants' school reading Beatrix Potter because I couldn't wait until I got home. Older, I loved the rabbits' mythology in "Watership Down". TV would have been Dr Who. Musically, I heard "Wigwam Bam" by The Sweet when I was 6 and I've never been the same since.

Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?

The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.

Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.

Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

Asserting, without evidence or reasoning, that ‘Englishness is an ethnicity’ and then using that assertion to deny millions of people their chosen identity, is really just an attempt to make naked, unthinking racism acceptable in polite society.

From tonight's Hookland talk on Re-enchantment as Resistance at @treadwells-books.bsky.social. 'Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom.' #FolkloreThursday
Folklore can ignite enchantment within us. Enchantment that fuels our imaginations. Enchantment that shifts our consciousness, allows us to envisage new and better worlds. It begins the process of manifesting the changes we desire. Re-enchanted, the world is full of new, feral possibilities. Re-enchanted our imagination is an accessible superpower.

The stories we intentionally absorb, the stories we select to tell ourselves, they allow us to live in the world differently. They allow us to make and remake the world differently.

Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom. We need this space. We ache for the sublime. For re-enchantment is an assertion of wonder and the numinosity of our relationships with landscape. Re-enchantment is an assertion of our collective ability to both imagine and experience better worlds. As a refusal of despair, as a lensing of hope. In re-enchantment we stop dreaming of inevitable apocalypse and find the permissive space to tell stories of hope.

Re-enchantment is personal metamorphosis. The space in which we grow glowing red eyes to patrol our communities against this long night of authoritarian pisspuffinry. The space in which we develop iron-hard fur, immune to the curses reductionist racists, misogynists, homophobes and AI cultists throw at us. Re-enchantment as the permissive circle where we can voyage into ourselves and find the marvels and bravery we need to deal with this age of violent bruising. This is why I walk the territory of folklore. Wear my witch-cloak of swan feathers, hold hag stone to my eye. This is why I created Hookland as a home for stories, a community for Fully-grown Changelings.
