If I had to guess, I dont think there is some grand conspiracy against gamers. Its five companies trying to Make Number Go Up, and each inadvertently screwing the others, their industry's infrastructure, and themselves over because they didn't think that far ahead.

Best online community I've seen is on Deep Rock Galactic. Its more of a generalization than a certainty, but the number of truly awful people I've run into in 1000+ hours of pub games I can count on both hands. But its very much an oasis in a desert of slurs.
