new rule: if a university denied someone tenure, or let them go because it canceled their classes, or has shut down the department or program they used to teach in, that university's PR department forfeits the right to put out a celebratory statement when that person wins a Nobel

My 18 year old was at college and the class was split into groups to write a motto. So, one sentance. Every other group 'had an idea' and then used AI to write the motto. I nearly cried.

Reminder that "biological sex" is not a thing that exists. It is a legal fiction in every place that refers to it. In the UK, in the equality act, it means "the sex that was written on your original birth certificate." Incidentally, it doesn't matter if that's due to a clerical error.

I did that after the 2nd, but I was only just above the weight threshold, they told me to come back when I'd put on half a stone. Now in my middle-age spreadness I have no issues.

They have it here in Winterthur, I would guess it's because it is a perninant blood donation centre whereas when I've giving blood in the UK it's always been a temporary location.

As a receiver (and a Brit) I was not allowed to give blood for ages, but in Feb the rules changed and Brits and receivers (and both) are now allowed in Switzerland, so now I am once again in the black at the blood bank (allbeit a different branch). Also, a mini toblerone, coffee, and ice-cream here.

Trump has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, and while his kids "negotiate" a Ukrainian peace deal, he's paying Putin to breach sanctions. Hegseth is live-streaming an execution by firing squad, and gave the UFC a binding contract to train the US military in hand to hand combat.

Seems that the person who drafted the Green party motion came via Your Party and joined - by her own admission - to press this simply because the Greens had a bigger platform. Classic bit of entryism which now threatens the future of the movement.

I have two cats, one who has his tail, and one who has a tail currently connected to him. I maintain that no cat can be held accountable for crimes that somebody else's tail commits, just because said tail is attached to their butt.

one thing about me that consistently seems to shock people is that I do actually believe that all people have the right to live in freedom, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, disability, or age. like I do actually believe that and I apply it to *everyone*

I don’t want to sound glib, but if a woman actually wanted to “make up a crime to ruin a man’s reputation,” they’d pick one that people actually give a shit about, like hurting a dog or something.

Every time some pundit claims that no one would work if their basic needs were met, I think about how, after he retired, my dad would just show up at estate sales with his truck and offer to help folks take their furniture home because he just wanted to keep busy and be around people.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"
