just stumbled upon one of my former 5th grader's essays on gun control...
screenshot of an essay from a 5th grader on gun control in response to the Parkland shooting:

Guns need to be controlled in America because,we as a community can not risk losing more children and, adults. One girl named samantha got shot in both of her legs and got stitches in the florida shooting on valentines day. To prevent this event from happening again we need to control guns.We want students go to school safe and come back safe.

We can’t risk losing more children because if we lose more children and don’t control guns parents would be scared and afraid of sending their child to school. We should take action because, Trump is only sending prayers and we need more action than this. Also, we need to control guns because, if we don’t there would be more school shootings and more children would die. In America we had the most mass shootings between 1996-2012 than any country in the world.

In order to control guns we could lift the age to 22. There should be strict background checks, if we do this there would be less gun or school shootings in America. No one should be allowed to buy a AR-15 ( assault rifle 15) because, this gun is mostly used in mass or school shootings. No one under 22 should be able to buy a AR-15 because many school shooters or mass shootings our committed to use this type of gun which kills a lot of people.

In conclusion we should control guns because we could lose more children and parents and relatives would cry.Gun control is important because, if many people would die. People would not come to america because of the mass shootings. And children would be afraid of sending their children to school in america .America would be powerless.without citizens We should stop the NRA because, they would just give random people guns without doing a background check and it could end up in a big mess. We all should convince the government because, if we don't convince them they would still support the NRA and they would get money... (ending cut off)

Don't let copaganda fool you — police violence is not tied to their safety. In 2025, the vast majority of killings began with police responding to suspected non-violent offenses or cases where no crime was reported.
Screenshot of chart showing how police killings in 2025 began. 680 were suspected non-violent offenses or cases where no crime was reported. 112 were traffic violations. 84 were unknown.

NYC’s Adopted FY27 Budget Still Fails Our Public Libraries, and provides $91,132,000 less to libraries than Mayor Mamdani promised. NYC PLAN will continue pushing to see library budgets equal 0.5% of the total budget in the FY28 budget and beyond. Full response: nycplan.org/press-releas...
A tan square with a NYC Public library Action Network at the top is filled with a graph showing comparative funding for FY26, FY26 adjusted for inflation, FY27, and FY27 if Mayor Mamdani had kept his campaign promise to fund our library systems at 0.5% of the budget. The graph shows that FY27 funding is less than the funding provided for FY26 when accounting for inflation, and significantly less than the funding our libraries would have received if Mayor Mamdani had kept his promise.

Statement on Mayor Mamdani's City Budget

Today, Mayor Mamdani released his Executive Budget for FY27. NYC PLAN is disappointed to see that it was $97 million short of his promise to fund libraries at 0.5% of the city expense budget. We will have a more detailed statement in the coming days. In the meantime, please follow NYC PLAN on social media to get plugged into our work.

The fight isn't over. No more broken promises!
