Knoxville "Topo" Map WIP I am a big fan of mid-century USGS Topo maps. This is a 48k scale 24x36 version of Knoxville. Still have many labels to edit. One day, I will stop making multiline labels in QGIS. They are a pain to edit in Illustrator/Affinity. #gis #cartography #gischat

Geohipster 2027 Calendar
Above is a map from the 2026 Geohipster Calendar by Antonio Smith - Noteworthy because it's East Tennessee. The 2027 Geohipster calendar is now accepting admissions. You may think "Well it's a bunch of open source weirdos over at Geohipster" and you could be right - but we're also a group of Map weirdos. The above map used about everything you can use for maps and graphs.

Every day, India's Met department publishes a forecast chart for ~1,200 stations. Their cloud-cover panel is drawn to look like a pixelated cloudy sky! I've been analyzing the charts to convert them to data, and map them daily in the same pixel art style. #dataviz diagramchasing.fun/2026/mapping...

A few days ago, Lake Mead water levels were mentioned (I don't remember the post), which got me curious. Normally, I like to create a little map, but I didn't have time for that. So I made a quick screen record of a swipe map. July 1984 v July 2026 Seems not ideal. #gischat

I hate driving most new cars. They are big and isolated from the road, it is hard to tell how fast you are going without staring at the speedo. 25 mph feels the same as 50!

First rule of cartography: first we make ugly maps and then we make them pretty. This is a corollary to "write drunk, edit sober". #gischat do you have any rules or encouragement you tell yourself?

I have seen this gap in census primary road layer for years. I assumed it was a state highway that ended and became a residential street or something. Nope! It's I-275 and that's I-40 to the south. Le sigh

This map uses a graphic technique to argue that New York City was already a mostly socialist community by the end of the 19th century. It uses just two colors: red, the printing color, and the negative white space of the paper color.

New on the blog: "On Sin," in which I meditate on cartographic ethics, and invite discussion on a thorny problem: how we might decide if or when the inaccuracies embedded in a #map cause it to become unethical.

About halfway through, I stopped reading their positions and got most of them right. Trying to guess the "did not votes" tripped me up. Race, gender & age (mostly the first two) should get you a passing score.

I am rearranging my home office, a process that will probably take 10 yrs or so, and I was thinking about getting a MercatorHater poster for my freshly painted walls. I didn't find anything, so I will probably have to make it myself. But Google did send me this Medium post from @mapcenter.com.

I wrote about a similar thing a few months ago. My main issue was saying Lat/Lon (which correlates to Y/X) and then saying X/Y (which correlates with Lon/Lat). Inverting the pairs led to downstream confusion. I started saying: Lon-Lat-X-Y And it helped! 🥳 antonioantoine.com/2026/02/17/l...

Going through the Knoxville Library archives, looking for photographs of a building or two, and I came across this guy. I can't get over how insane it is to fly a plane like this. No cockpit, windshield, or anything. Just flying a canoe in the air. lol

TIL the midnight sun at the north pole lasts about a week longer than its polar night (186 vs 179 days, respectively). This is due to our slightly elliptical orbit around the sun. We are further away from the sun in July and closer in January. All of this info is counterintuitive to me lol.

I saw a post on LI about a small AI company co-founder complaining about professors not letting students use AI in the classroom. His point was that AI was using "common knowledge" so professors needed to adapt to the changing times. Which is clearly missing the point of doing the work.
