That is a good read. I am definitely a fan of the full bleed print in cartography. I tried a neatline with the Prudence Island map and it failed lol. I am going to talk about it in upcoming webinar.

Thank you! The background color and the river were my base colors that I built a palette around. I am pretty happy with it. UT orange is a tough color to build a map with.

I am normally not a neatline/border kinda guy, but I think with this USGS topo inspired map it works. #cartography #gis #gischat

+20M visits from Canada in the 2010s is pretty wild. Their population was like ~35M.

Oh man, I forgot all about cartographic representations. I did some digging and it looks like they are kinda read only in Pro. It appears that Attribute Driven Symbology replaced it. resource.esriuk.com/blog/cartogr...

Knoxville "Topo" Map WIP I am a big fan of mid-century USGS Topo maps. This is a 48k scale 24x36 version of Knoxville. Still have many labels to edit. One day, I will stop making multiline labels in QGIS. They are a pain to edit in Illustrator/Affinity. #gis #cartography #gischat

Above is a map from the 2026 Geohipster Calendar by Antonio Smith - Noteworthy because it's East Tennessee. The 2027 Geohipster calendar is now accepting admissions. You may think "Well it's a bunch of open source weirdos over at Geohipster" and you could be right - but we're also a group of Map weirdos. The above map used about everything you can use for maps and graphs.

Every day, India's Met department publishes a forecast chart for ~1,200 stations. Their cloud-cover panel is drawn to look like a pixelated cloudy sky! I've been analyzing the charts to convert them to data, and map them daily in the same pixel art style. #dataviz diagramchasing.fun/2026/mapping...

A few days ago, Lake Mead water levels were mentioned (I don't remember the post), which got me curious. Normally, I like to create a little map, but I didn't have time for that. So I made a quick screen record of a swipe map. July 1984 v July 2026 Seems not ideal. #gischat

Hmmm... You may have to use page queries that filter features based on the location. I use them to remove features outside the AOI for my map series maps.

You may be able to use the Thematic Map Series with sub-group layers. I don't have a map handy to test it on. doc.esri.com/en/arcgis-pr...

I hate driving most new cars. They are big and isolated from the road, it is hard to tell how fast you are going without staring at the speedo. 25 mph feels the same as 50!

Fair. But, that is the risk one takes when conducting a year long experiment in public on a pretty divisive issue. If the goal is an exploration of genAI in carto then that could have been communicated easily enough. I'm still not a fan of the approach, but that is at least understandable.

Reading for fun seems like an area where you have to WANT to do it. The bar for entry is very low, but the time commitment is relatively high. Now we have TV, video games, and social media to kill whatever attention span dudes had left. I'm not sure if there is a marketing issue there or not.

Most of my ex-gfs had degrees and read on occasion. Education may have downstream effects on reading. My wife has an MS and she reads every day. A lot of dudes I know don't like sitting still in general. Much less opening a book. The ones who do read have degrees outside of STEM.

I started tinkering and now I have a very expensive and ill-advised hobby.🤣 My kids (both boys) aren't as bored as I was. They have no interest in cars. My oldest son reads (or at least he used to); my youngest son does not (he does draw tho). FWIW, the oldest is gay and the youngest is straight.

I feel like things have rolled back across the board. I am a car enthusiast, one of the most male coded hobbies out there. That space has shrunk considerably! There is concern about it dying. I wasn't much of a car guy when I was young. I picked it up after HS because I was bored in rural AL.

Antonio Antoine @aasmith.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
This is interesting. I grew up in the country (AL), but don't recall a time when men read much outside of a newspaper or magazine. When I was a teen/20-something, if my male friends read at all, it was comic books or graphic novels. We all played sports or video games.

1902 newspaper ads be wildin'. Are you a pale lady? That's because you are clearly diseased!! Buy and drink our alcoholic concoction!
1902 Knoxville Sentinel newspaper ad that reads:

ARE YOU PALE

Vinol Makes Rosey Cheeks.

There is no surer indication of a diseased condition than a pale face.

I have seen this gap in census primary road layer for years. I assumed it was a state highway that ended and became a residential street or something. Nope! It's I-275 and that's I-40 to the south. Le sigh

I was more confused when I saw the web maps! The distance between the web and static maps was huge. From what I could tell, they looked like they used existing datasets for the web maps? Why not do the same for the static maps? Very confused.

This map uses a graphic technique to argue that New York City was already a mostly socialist community by the end of the 19th century. It uses just two colors: red, the printing color, and the negative white space of the paper color.
