Hopeful author and audiobook narrator. Constantly mixing up G.K. Chesterton and C.S Lewis quotes.

In summary: 1. Baseball has accepted a baseline level of violence for well over a century. 2. This is dumb and it should not. Sorry for Amerisplaining stuff about baseball fights you prolly already know, Danny. I just love the game in spite of its tradition-fueled gang fight LARPing.

Honestly, I'd never put 2 and 2 together in terms of violence. It's a good point. I think I'm desensitized after growing up in the height of the Red Sox/Yankee rivalry. I always felt baseball fights were chest-thumping but necessary playacting. Baseball and real life only interacted after 9/11.

I think it's getting better, though. Players realize this is a game, not a war. We're seeing fewer headhunting pitchers, dirty slides, and fights because it's no longer "just how you play the game." Players can peacock (a big ol' fightstarter for baseball traditionalists) without getting jawed at.

So if that's the case, why fight at all? The ancient meta at play here isn't actually the fight itself, it's the side effect of stirring up the team. A safer version is managers obnoxiously arguing calls until they get tossed, inciting passion, and hopefully, better play from your team.

At the mosh pit stage, the two combatants are separated and restrained while the rest of their team saber-rattles and trashtalks (or you find a few opponents on the fringes, catching up like they're in line at the grocery store). Their team pride secured, both teams part ways "reluctantly".

Halfway to the mound, you usually see them slow way down as they start thinking. They don't wanna fight. They don't wanna get hurt. No one wants to tussle another 6 foot, 200lb dude, so to save face, so they'll throw a few badly aimed slaps, and then the benches clear and it turns into a mosh pit.

So you have tired dudes playing a slog of a season, a "storied" tradition of being thin-skinned about a host of perceived slights, and then someone throws a 97mph fastball up near your noggin. Lizard brain fight-or-flight takes over, augmented with hurt ego, pride, and a sense of righteous fury.

(Sorry, this is long!) A few factors: 1. Baseball has a stupid long season with a stupid lot of games 2. Baseball has a stupid long marriage with weird machismo attached to "unwritten rules" 3. Baseball is built on hand-catapulting and wood-launching small missiles at the peak of human athleticism

I guess this is all to say that I love clean sightlines in multiplayer games. That's pretty much it. If my kid moves on to CS2 at some point, I'll probably follow, but I'm gonna be even worse than I am at Valorant. Brim main, BTW.

Aaron Waite @aaronwaite.net · 12/02/2026
I like to look down a hallway and see everything I need to see (outside of a few Cypher tripwires, maybe). I like that I don't have to parse 1500 different visual artifacts to find someone crouching in a corner. Now, if someone crouches in a corner and I didn't check it, that works for me.

Aaron Waite @aaronwaite.net · 12/02/2026
Good, unexpected positioning? Absolutely. But man, I hate it when I don't see someone because they got stuck in a mishmash of textures. But man, you get a good, clean art style with clear sightlines, and I am all about it. Overwatch, Halo CE, and Valorant are in that visual sweet spot for me.

Aaron Waite @aaronwaite.net · 12/02/2026
Outside of the still-phenomenal-if-slightly-creaky game design, there's not a whole lot to link Valorant and ye olde Halo. Except the visual design. See, I'm not big into ghille-suited multiplayer, so to speak. I don't like camouflage coming into play, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Aaron Waite @aaronwaite.net · 12/02/2026
(This might be a long, pointless rant about map and visual design. If you actually know stuff in this area, I'm extremely sorry for my ignorance in advance) I've been playing far more Valorant than someone with my late-30s PvP sensibilities should. But my kid loves it and it reminds me of Halo CE.

@tiwyfb.bsky.social Hiya! I've got a buddy who watched the Dodgers vs Cardinals on July 4th, 1985, and Ozzie Smith made a great catch in the 8th inning. The closest footage I can find to the date is your 7-6-1985 game. Would you happen to have that game in your stash? Either way, thank you for you!

We spend six months out of the year in a frozen hellscape with nothing to do but stay inside and contemplate the horrors of the human heart, what else do you expect from us? Oh, wait, this is about writers, not Maine baseball fans.

After watching the ALCS last night, I was inspired to write a poem about the Mariners fandom. Growing up as a Red Sox fan in the early 90s, I genuinely thought I knew I knew misery. As it turns out, I know nothing of pain. Nothing at all.
Hope is a weed
Grows betwixt cracks
In the armor
In the heart
In the soul
It's never false
Just impotent
Growing stronger
Not strong enough
Climbing higher
But not steady
Glorious the view
And so the drop
A Louisville breeze
Sweeps Seattle
Quenching light
The Nor'west dark
Hopes held shut for
Dreamless healing
From the fall
To winter
To the spring
When Sisyphus
Sinews reknit
His heart to sleeve
Shoulder to rock
Upon his head
The curse's mark
Mariners hat
"Onward, upward,"
Mutters a city
Sans malice
Sans feeling
Sans remorse

To be fair, in 80s movies, everyone over the age of 30 was considered ancient and decrepit. Except for Judd Nelson in Breakfast Club, who was 30 and considered 17.

I think if I had a PC that could run Red Dead Redemption 2 in its truest and best form, I might not play anything else for a few years. The Xbox version is awesome, but if I had mods...well, it's probably best for the people in my life who prefer me to sleep and bathe regularly.

I'm very, super, awfully proud of this one, pleeeeeease give it a listen! If you like cozy fantasy, you absolutely OWE it to yourself to take this book in, either through your ears or through your eyes! I do not recommend eating Tangleweed & Waterbloom, however. You don't get the nuance that way.

When you omit "A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol," you completely alter what Scully was describing as "marvelous." Scully was NOT just broadly marveling. He was marveling at a very specific, very important thing.
