The way the screen in the hall was like a confessional for Odysseus’ literal confession. But I felt atonement itself was displaced to going “west” and hoping future generations opted for the lotus. I didn’t find the ending satisfying since Nolan can’t seem to get beyond choosing death or exile.

Quick thoughts: Atonement—sacrifice itself—is the object of ambiguity at the end. If capitalism is modernity's trojan horse, what breaks the world, there's no more westward lands to go to atone. Hoping future generations will forget the violence just brings Odysseus back to the problem of the lotus.
