I've spent nearly two decades running #NetBSD and for much of it, people's reactions were largely the same: "I have an x86 computer, pretty much everything is x86 now, why should I care about portability?" Despite being famous for it, portability is not what draws me to NetBSD. I honestly […]

Bike shop around the corner is closed - but, fortunately, I have a basement of Infinite Forgotten ADHD Whims: seriously had no idea I had these, nor when I got them or why. Anyway replacement cable is on deck.

Oh THAT is why it's getting hard to shift gears.
Close up view of a bicycle, just above the crankset, where the shift cable connects to the front derailleur. Said cable is badly frayed with only a few strands still connected.

This is your occasional backup reminder - if you haven’t yet, go start setting up backups of any kind. If you think you don’t need backups, delete everything you have on the device you’re using right now. If that seems like a bad idea then you need backups.

I quietly released Nepenthes 2.8, primarily a bugfix version, a while ago. Judging by the significant pop in downloads shortly after, I conclude the RSS feeds in the artifact manager hosting it work and are useful to people.

Early 2000s: I can't find a thing to do exactly what I want. Ok I'll do it myself. 2026: doing the exact same thing, for *almost* the exact same reasons but also because fuck gen ai, fuck enshittification, fuck the chokehold certain developers/companies have on the web, I WILL DO IT MYSELF.

I have very strong opinions about unix ( Linux, and especially Redhat, isn't unix anymore. Just listen to Lennart. ) And no I will NOT back down. This is a holy war, one I enlisted in long ago. Promoted to officer, probably. I will not back down.

I switched to Linux full time around 2000, 2001 when I finally got my shiny new hi-def M-Audio sound card to work using OSS drivers. I've been learning a new sound subsystem every two to three years ever since. I've forgotten more than I can remember. Seems like audio APIs under Linux are […]

Update: I've identified it. My gut feeling was right, it's not LLM related at all. It's far, FAR more stupid . I'm a touched miffed how much time I spent on it, honestly. I'll post a blog form update with details once I stop screaming - and am confident my countermeasure works long term.

The counterpoint is: maybe we don't. The bad actors making this necessary aren't going to care, and anything further to restrict access based on behavior is only going to make the web smaller, more enclosed, less open. Giving a community more tools to enforce norms is good, but no technical […]

We need a replacement for robots.txt. It should be opt-in, consent based: explicitly list what is allowed to be accessed, like sitemap.xml, but allowing permission to vary depending on who's asking. It should have teeth. Trying something not explicitly permitted results in consequences - up to […]

Today I learned about tiago.zip. This justification for being opt-out is .... dubious, to be honest. I just figured out how to make nginx choose differing back ends via User Agent. I'm going to make them opt-out FROM ME.
Screenshot of tiago.zip's Mastodon corpus download page:

"why isn't this opt-in?

if you don't know about it you can't opt in, and a snapshot of the few hundred people who did isn't useful for anything. it also wouldn't reflect the network, which defeats the point of studying it. "
