I think that's a different issue though. We are going to get fully automated vehicles long before we figure out how to do without them completely.

I don't think that the self driving cars are quite ready for the challenges of NYC, but they are continuing to improve every day, and meanwhile human drivers are doing shit like this every day. The breakeven point is getting extremely close, and we need to be prepared.

reminds me of this old joke
An orthodox Rabbi walks into a restaurant...
It’s not a kosher place, but he thinks “what the hell, why not?” He asks for a seat outside.

He looks at the menu, and decides if he’s gonna eat non-Kosher food, he’s going to do it in the biggest way possible. He orders a whole, roasted suckling pig, complete with multiple sauces and an apple in its mouth.

The dish comes out, and just as the waiter is setting it as his table, the rabbi sees one of his congregants walking towards him on the sidewalk. The rabbi is terrified of being caught.

Panicking, he shouts out “would you look how they serve an apple here??”

I've experimented with various fats, and find that plain oil (e.g. canola) works the best. Solid fats (schmaltz, bacon grease, butter) do add some flavor, but it's intrusive and makes the texture too much like brioche (which is also delicious but a different type of bread).

In practice, it has has a lot to do with whether the bread is dairy or parave, as both are valid but not interchangeable depending on what else is being eaten.

After the Green Party's "Zionism is Racism" vote, the Leader of Haringey Council, controlled by the Greens, wrote to some Synagogues in the borough to "reassure" them. I want to show you Highgate Synagogue's reply. I believe it is worth reading in its entirety. www.jewishnews.co.uk/synagogue-re...
Dear Mark Thank you for your emails to us. We take it from both the tone and the content of your email that you are deeply embarrassed with the decision taken by your party to not only brand Zionism as racism but to call for the eradication by any means necessary including violence, of the only Jewish state, the only practising democracy in the Middle East, and also home to half of the world’s Jewish population. We are not surprised you are embarrassed. The policy decision which has not just been endorsed by but was publicly celebrated by the Haringey branch of the Green Party, of which we assume you are a member, is thus aligning itself with Hamas, a genocidal, homophobic and misogynistic Islamist terrorist organisation not only responsible for the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, but countless murders and torture of its own people. You may not be aware that members of our synagogue have close relatives and friends who perished in that pogrom - of which today is the third anniversary - not to mention other horrendous terrorist atrocities carried out in the name of the resistance that your party supports. We also adopted Emily Damari, a British Israeli hostage who was kidnapped by Hamas from her home at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, suffered terribly at the hands of her Hamas jailers and had to keep her sexual orientation secret from her kidnappers or else would have been murdered, along with 87 others including the Bibas children, four year old Arieh and nine month old Kfir who were killed in cold blood for the sole crime of being Jewish children born in their ancestral homeland. Our synagogue along with the majority of British synagogues recites weekly Sabbath prayers for both the Royal Family of the United Kingdom and the State of Israel and will continue to do so, irrespective of what you or other Green Party members think.

Love of Zion and a hope to be able to return to live in our ancestral homeland is integral to all streams of Judaism, as, it so happens,Earlier this year we hosted at Highgate Synagogue a noted Palestinian campaigner Ahmed Fouad AlKhatib who lost more than 30 family members in Gaza. He told a packed synagogue - and it was really packed -- how he as a Gazan and a Palestinian believed that Hamas had brought nothing but disaster on the Palestinian people, and that those keffiyeh wearing sympathizers in the West who cheer for Hamas are doing more harm than good. He was no shill for Israel or its Prime Minister, but he at least acknowledged the attachment of Jews to this land, and the fact that non-Jews in Israel have rights that no-one, certainly not Jews or Christians, let alone Muslims can aspire to anywhere else in the Middle East. So no, we don’t accept your assurances that we are safe under your watch. You may see no connection between the ceaseless vilification of Israel, the blood libels that you and your party regularly trot out, and the hostility to Jews in this country, but we do. If this motion does not mean that Jews in Haringey who have family or friends in Israel, or who attend our synagogue, or who maybe aren’t religious but believe that there is a place for a haven for the tattered remnant of the most persecuted race on earth, are considered by you and your party as racists and by implication fair game for ostracism, intimidation, violence or worse, please explain to us what else it means. And if that is indeed what it means, and we are pretty sure that those who voted for it believe that is precisely what it means, how can we as Jews feel safe when the largest party of the borough we live in, entirely peacefully up to now, publicly align yourself with the most virulent jew-hating racists of all, Hamas and the Nazis. As it is, despite living in one of the most peaceful and crime free parts of the borough, we have had as a synagogue to invest substantial sums in building terrorism-proof fences round our premises, and employ both volunteers and professional security with stab vests to enSo your embarrassment is not enough. If you really want us to feel you do not agree with the racist and genocidal implications of your party’s policy, the least we can expect is for you to publicly resile yourself from that policy and commit yourself and your party colleagues to reverse that policy and to educate themselves about the realities of the Middle East conflict, and about Jewish life, before you pronounce on these matters with such unshakeable certainty again. Yours sincerely,

This piece really elucidates the underlying problem of how Mamdani's entire approach to Jews, Israel, and Zionism is fundamentally flawed, and why I find it so unsettling. It's such a drastic departure from how mayors from Giuliani to de Blasio to Adams dealt with the Jews of their city.

Not to pick on James here, but this is a naive reading of the stated position. They are in fact advocating breaking the cycle and achieving peace just as they claim. The difference is that they mean do it at the cost of Israel's complete and utter annihilation. That's their solution.

The issue here is one side is focused solely on the ethics and the costs (IP theft, resources, etc.) and doesn't care about what it actually does, and the other only looks at the accomplishments, nevermind how they were achieved. They are having two completely different arguments, with zero overlap

OK, but that's literally what this entire post is about. The people who are protesting today. And you have been in here arguing about how we are overreacting, then condescending when we take offense. Now bringing up some hypothetical protest last April with different motives is irrelevant.

I have typed and then deleted so many replies today. While it's been reassuring to share in observance of Oct 7 with the community, it's also been pretty awful wading through the hundreds of ignorant and hateful messages denying, supporting, minimizing, and justifying the most heinous of crimes.

The reason we are upset is that you are still insisting that only SOME of the many many people protesting ON October 7 (or celebrating it outright) are motivated by anything other than the purest most innocent ideals.

I just took the test and got the same thing. I think that what's happened is everyone else has moved to the right. Allowing far-right extremists like Ben-Gvir into the govt has shifted the Overton window, so traditional right-wingers like Bennett & Lieberman now seem like centrists by comparison.

David B @aardvark007.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
At the risk of reading too much into a tweet, the language here is also telling. The brutal massacre of civilians on October 7 is described benignly as an "action", but the military response against the perpetrators is "unspeakable".
110
David B @aardvark007.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Aside from the specious "genocide" accusation, this is both circular logic and a complete violation of causality. You can't justify the atrocities of Oct 7 by the subsequent actions of the country that was being attacked for things they hadn't done yet. That's not how time works!

This is the issue I have with the "Free Palestine" crowd. They could have carried a PLO flag, and a picture of Marwan Barghouti or Arafat. But they continue to choose the unrepentant terrorists. "but it's only 1 guy!" yeah, and and notice that no one around him is objecting.
