If you need to sell lots of gold London is and has been for a long time the better market to store your gold in. post Covid London has been moving back to being the dominant of the two markets - increasing US political uncertainty will only speed that up.

Costs a lot to remove the alcohol from the normal beer that gets produced first, and it’s such a small market that the economies of scale aren’t there so not significantly more profitable

May 21st 1936, the Financial News reported that the BOE bought £13 #gold, having bought £700k a few days before. Did someone turn up at Threadneedle St & sell the Bank two ounces of gold? Daily balance books are recorded in £'000s, so the figure can't be verified directly. @boeresearch.bsky.social

In 1938, small investors, especially in France, hoarded #gold coins because gold bars were too expensive. High demand pushed coin prices above their gold value. Some state banks profited by selling coins at a premium and replacing them with cheaper gold bars.

The majority of gold owned is jewellery(54%) financial demand causes a lot of churn, but the stock of gold builds up mostly with consumers. It would be fundamentally determined by savings ability and economic growth. Gold is not simply a financial asset. In the long run consmers are the holders.

Gold is not a normal asset-by the logic that fear is only sentiment there are no fundmental drivers for gold-without a yeild. If a bubble occrs when high prices are not justified then gold at 5k is justified if there were to be a serious shock in confidence in the dollar without an alternative.
