i wrote about new flanland, my radio show for @wfmu.bsky.social in the new issue of great river review with small selection of flyers, unrelated cover art by moi, thanks @bryanthomasdaly.bsky.social for the opportunity & support :)
I've hosted a radio show since 2021. I almost decided against it because it seemed like too big of a commitment, but then my boyfriend at the time said he would be "so jealous" if I had a show on WFMU, forcing me to become a world famous internet radio DJ.

I love making flyers so I've made a flyer for every show. My rules for the drawing are black and white ink only, an hour or two max expenditure, and no do-overs. I love information-dense pictures and gags and fonts and have since I was a kid. I would scan Where's Waldo for the jokes and copy gooey fonts out of MAD magazine. I studied Sergio Aragonés' drawing of Woodstock and it felt like being there. I loved Matt Groening's comics from Life in Hell and sought out all the music Bongo had in his room: Yma Sumac, Frank Zappa, Lee Perry, the Screamers. The image of a kid alone with his records is like water lilies to me; I could draw it over and over over again.

It turns out that curating an hour of music, making art for that hour, and blasting both on a weekly basis has been great for me. It's loosened my ideas of what's good and what's worth sharing, which is "not everything" but "not nothing" either.

I play what I want, with a few fixed stars and some seasonal variations: soul and dub when it's nice out, jazz and ambient in the wintertime, and four weeks of scary music every October.

When I make mixes I am playing hopscotch: what's the link between Ornette Coleman and the Minutemen? (zamrock, CCR.) What Max Roach album can you play on Christmas Eve? (M' Boom.) Are there any reggae songs about mon-sters? (Lots!) What do Nina Simone and Judee Sill have in common? (Every-thing.) Are the Misfits an oldies band? (Yes.) That kind of thing.

In my dreams everyone I know has a broadcast of some kind and I could find them as long as I had the call numbers. In my dreams this looks like a campground after dark, where every spot is lit by firelight and you feel your way there...in your slippies, stumbling towards that shared psychic space made strange and intimate by the night.

When people stop making art or stop sharing it, that spot goes dark. This is almost irresistible given the time, the risk, and the thousand ersatz means of connection offered to us, not to mention the supersaturation of makers, DJs, whatever, but it's extremely important for you and me to do our thing, bashful and lazy though we may be. This is how I prefer to find you and for you to find me, on that invisible plane of art, music, and feeling.native minnesota hadrosaurs relaxing, sniffing the air to catch a nice breeze etcfull scene with some native minnesota hadrosaurs raptors and prehistoric mammal & fish as well
