Was not expecting the McGahern memoir to open with football, or to reveal that John’s first date with Madeleine was United V West Ham at Upton Park in 1967. United won 3-1, and Nobby Stiles, George Best and Bobby Charlton all played that day.

Oh Dolly. Interviewed her by phone with a strict 10 minute slot. She said we could “crank it up” and our chat for was 20. Hilarious, no ego and wonderful. Apart from the voice, she understood systemic, intergenerational poverty, who used her wealth for good and sent books to millions of kids. RIP 💜
