Which John Scalzi Novel Should I Read First?
I get asked a lot by people new to me (or new to my fiction, anyway) which novel of mine they should read first. I have a long-winded answer to this that says, well, I write nearly all of my books …

Went to our town's pumpkin festival tonight and had my yearly allotment of fair food, including a funnel cake. A funnel cake is definitely a once-a-year thing; any more than that and my aorta would absolutely clog.
The town's annual pumpkin pyramid, which, as the name suggests, is a pyramid made at least partially out of pumpkin

To be fair to the Society of Authors, it is not the first author's organization in recent memory to step on its own dick about "AI," nor is it likely to be the last. It is interesting to note the boardroom-level disconnect with the constituency in each case so far, re: "AI" use, however.

That field is full of soybeans ready to be harvested! Next year that field will have corn. It's a cycle where one adds nitrogen to the soil and the other takes it out.

Krissy was mowing the lawn when the belt to the blades snapped and now the lawn is half-mowed and will be until the belt is replaced it is really really really messing with her sense of order I told Krissy I might post about it and she said to let you all know that she. is. PISSED. right now.

And while we're on the subject: there's no ethical use of a product brought to market through unethical means. It doesn't matter whether the product is "AI" or chocolate or diamonds. Most generative "AI" was knowingly developed through massive theft from creatives; we have the emails admitting this.

The acid test for me is a simple one: Has my professional and/or creative life benefited in any material way from "AI," and very specifically generative "AI"? No, it hasn't. Has it been negatively impacted by the same? Yup, in a whole bunch of ways. My professional life is worse now for it.
