NEW!! Online Course - Fall 2026

BORDERS

Borders are instrumental to our daily lives: they connect, divide, reorient, prohibit and facilitate relations in society, in politics, and in the economy. They are often associated with violence and instability (as on the US-Mexico border), and remain at the heart of many of our contemporary debates. This course introduces some of the ways that geographers and other scholars have conceptualised borders, and will equip students with the analytical and theoretical tools to identify and critique the many ways that borders shape the world around them.

Have some questions about GEOG 4828 then email us at geography@smu.ca.

Text
Lecture Series on the Contemporary Polycrisis
Disturbed by fascism and oligarchies? Distressed by the current polycrisis in Canada, the US and globally? Disillusioned by the fragmented state of democracy? Don't know where to start?

Come hear Dr. Teresa Heffernan speak. Q + A to follow.
Friday, March 27, 7 pm
Location: King's College (Halifax)
Archibald Room, New Academic Building

Lecture description
"From Alan Turing and Samuel Butler to Peter Thiel and J.R.R. Tolkien, to Elon Musk and Gene Roddenberry, the fiction and science of artificial intelligence have long been entangled and conflated in the cultural imaginary.

Obscuring the important social, political and ethical questions these technologies raise, the AI industry co-opts fiction only to marginalize the literary imagination in discussions of a technological future.

What are the costs of collapsing animals with machines? Of turning language into numbers? And why is this field steeped in orphic language? As the AI industry reshapes knowledge, this talk considers what gets lost when the centuries-old study of human society and culture is swallowed up by a very different type of knowledge generated algorithms, linear algebra and statistics, and why it is imperative to keep the tension between computation and languages alive."

“Mystery, Mystagogy, and the Modern University: An Annunciation Lecture," with Dr. Luke Togni

📅 Wednesday, March 25
🕖 7-9 pm
📍Sobey Building Room 324 at SMU
(reception to follow)

Must, as Tertullian quipped, Jerusalem have nothing to do with Athens?

Inspired by the meeting of worlds in the Annunciation, this Catholic Studies lecture proposes that if the Church enriches its mystagogy through the modern university, its pursuit of the unifying mystery can propel the university to deepen in its own relentless pursuit of truth.

Dr. Togni is the Research Fellow of the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University, an adjunct professor at Dalhousie University's Department of Classics, and a part-time instructor with SMU's Department for the Study of Religion.

Lecture description:
This talk will examine how the colonial construction of ‘Hinduism’ and ‘Hindu’ as religious and political identity categories, both in India and in the diaspora, has prevented modern progressive movements to emerge within Hindu-identified communities.

“Hinduish” attempts to think critically about Hinduism and modern identity politics to imagine how a relational ethics of justice and liberation might meaningfully take root.

Dr. Krishnamurti is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Gender Studies at Queen’s University in Katarokwi (Kingston, Ontario), Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee territory. Her work takes a critical race feminist approach to religion and representation in the South Asian diaspora and in transnational cultures.

Join #SMUReligion for this Catholic Studies lecture with Dr. Luke Togni. He proposes that if the Church enriches its mystagogy through the modern university, its pursuit of the unifying mystery can propel the university to deepen its own relentless pursuit of truth.
