When Don answers the door, HE POCKETS THE GUN. He doesn’t give it to Helen to retrieve her leopard coat. He coolly conceals it. And there it’ll stay, because he knows it’s only a matter of time before he uses it. Wilder subtly, skillfully bypasses the Breen Office. #TheNoirCollective #TheLostWeekend

NEXT WED at #TheNoirCollective: One of the first American films hailed as “noir” – and the most honored, with four Oscars, including Best Picture. @ctmillion.bsky.social and I are hosting THE LOST WEEKEND (1945). What happens when you hunger for the American Dream – but can’t quench your thirst

Folks might recall we were due to host this on September 2, but both Bluesky and Internet Archive were having issues. So I’m going on record here and now as saying that come rain or come shine, come hell or high water, come glitching, come buffering – even if CT and I have to host this damn movie on Zoom using sock puppets – we will be watching THE LOST WEEKEND on October 7, and as God as my witness, we will never be thirsty again.

I think this is the first time I’ve posted anything. But I can’t let a birthday greeting like that go unanswered. 😅 Thank you so much! And I’m so glad you liked the album. Growing up, I always wanted to be “the boy who sings with the band,” and this album was a chance to make a dream come true.

Today is Philip’s birthday. I wanted to do something special, so I surprised him by remastering his first solo album, which came out in 2000. It’s songs of the big-band era, and Philip is glorious. If you love the Great American Songbook, I hope you’ll give a listen.😊 music.apple.com/us/album/whe...

Only #DoctorWho fans will get this. Philip and I went to a sculpture garden today, he took this pic of me, and said I looked great and should post it. But when I look at it, all I see is “Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink." 🤷‍♂️😅

Friends here loathed THE GAY DESPERADO when it aired Tuesday on TCM. We finally watched – and loved it. We started laughing at the start and never stopped. We loved the mashup and sendup of genres. The look – incl. shots of huge cacti spoofing Eisenstein’s Mexican footage – had us in stitches. (1/2)

From 1938-42, Lucille Ball was known as “Queen of the B’s” at RKO, starring in seven or eight programmers a year. Some were great, most mediocre – but through them, she developed a gift for one-liners, a flair for physical comedy and a relatability that audiences relished. #TheNoirCollective (1/4)

Three of Lucille Ball’s best roles at RKO: opposite Chester Morris in the suspense thriller FIVE CAME BACK (1939); as burlesque queen Bubbles in the feminist-tinged drama DANCE, GIRL, DANCE (1940); and opposite Henry Fonda in the Runyonesque fable THE BIG STREET (1942).

#Obsession is the rare film where the characters are initially defined by how they’re acting, not by who they are. We meet them under extreme circumstances, with few insights into their true nature. That will all start to change once a certain dog enters the picture. 🦮 #TheNoirCollective #TCMParty

Preston Sturges was #BOTD, and I’ve seen a lot of praise for the films he wrote & directed. But 3 of my 4 favorite Sturges screenplays were directed by others: The Good Fairy (1935) by William Wyler, and Easy Living (1937) and Remember the Night (1940) by Mitchell Leisen. Find them. Savor them. 😊

Frank Morgan and Margaret Sullavan face off in The Good Fairy; Jean Arthur is blinded by a runaway sable coat in Easy Living; Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray encounter a stubborn cow in Remember the Night.

1. REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940) Moving but not mawkish, insightful but not insistent. I know no holiday film as nurturing; it’s been a Xmas tradition in our home for 20 years. (Barbara Stanwyck, as a lady thief, delivers my personal credo: “I told you my mind works differently.”) #TheNoirCollective
