“I enjoyed hearing from providers from different states and learning more about how policy and location affected their practice.”

“It was refreshing to hear talks on the social/political context of abortion and reproductive healthcare. I think it is difficult to find time to think about this aspect of healthcare in medical school, when I am so focused on learning the physiology and medical aspects of care.”

“I really enjoyed the scope of the material that we were shown, as well as the opportunity for hands-on training. I also appreciated that there was information on residency planning and different methods of applying for both OB-GYN and family medicine.”

“I truly enjoyed the provider panel discussion at the end of the conference. I also loved the session on abortion later in pregnancy - it did a flawless job of supporting me in critically appraising my mental template on abortion later in pregnancy and equipped me with a far more accurate view!”

Consider this your sexual health check-in. 💛 STIs don’t always come with symptoms, so getting tested is part of taking care of yourself! For future healthcare providers, talking about sexual health is an important part of patient care.
Getting tested is self-care.
Your sexual health deserves a check-in even if you have no symptoms.Sexual health is healthcare and you have options for where you can get tested, so find what works best for you:

Ask your primary care provider or OB-GYN about STI testing.
Many local clinics offer affordable testing.
STI testing and treatment are available at Planned Parenthood.
At-home tests can offer more privacy and flexibility.
Some pharmacies offer STI testing or at-home testing kits.

🚩 Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs), also known as fake clinics, are intended to discourage people from accessing abortion care. Some even open right next to real health clinics to cause confusion.
Avoid Crisis Pregnancy Centers

CPCs are FAKE CLINICS that spread misinformation and discourage people from accessing abortion care.

How to spot a CPC:
Claims to offer abortion services but won't provide or refer you for an abortion.
Pressures you into continuing a pregnancy.
Discourages the use of birth control and condoms and doesn't provide them.
Expresses judgmental views about sex before marriage, single parents, and LGBTQ+ people.

MSFC Joins the National Abortion Federation in Supporting Abortion Care and Access Throughout Pregnancy
MSFC Joins the National Abortion Federation in Supporting Abortion Care and Access Throughout Pregnancy

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) recently issued its first policy statement since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision struck down Roe v. Wade.

“Using viability or gestation as legal thresholds misrepresents how medical decision-making works and creates a legal, not medical, limit on abortion that contributes to an environment of surveillance and prosecution for pregnant people and providers. While viability and gestational cut-offs are often presented as merely reasonable limits on abortion, they are, in fact, abortion bans.”

Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) strongly aligns with NAF’s policy position on abortion throughout pregnancy. For over 30 years, MSFC has advocated for evidence-based family planning and abortion education built on the foundation of science and that honors patients’ bodily autonomy.Since the Dobbs ruling, many medical students learning in states with restrictions or total bans have seen family planning and abortion education erased from their medical school’s curriculum. Some medical schools have even banned MSFC chapter events where a speaker planned to discuss providing abortion later in pregnancy.

MSFC members represent the future of reproductive healthcare in the United States. It is critical that future physicians receive evidence-based training, regardless of where their medical school is located, so they can provide exceptional care to the communities they hope to serve.

MSFC applauds NAF for their leadership in this pivotal moment. We proudly adopt the policy position supporting abortion care and access throughout pregnancy and will continue to oppose policies that interfere with that care, including viability limits and gestation-based bans.

In solidarity,

Pamela Merritt, Executive Director

Last Chance to Participate!

Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) is launching its next organization-wide strategic planning process.

MSFC sent a stakeholder survey in English, French, and Spanish. This survey invites you to share your thoughts on what MSFC should prioritize over the next 3 - 5 years to create a shared roadmap for the next phase of MSFC’s work. This anonymous survey will not ask you to identify yourself and takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete depending on how much information you want to share with MSFC. The survey will close on Friday, May 8.

Alumni, chapter leaders, and students also received an invitation to participate in a focus group to further explore your experiences with MSFC and to connect with others inside and outside your chapter and/or region.
