As @prh.org fellow, Dr. Verma, said “ we should not pretend that this is an issue of the science.” @acog.org: “complication or death risk from an abortion procedure “is less than the same risk from common procedures like wisdom tooth removal, cancer-screening colonoscopy, and plastic surgery.”

Anyway, in conclusion, at this very moment, someone in red America is taking abortion medications out of a bulk supply in their closet and putting it in a nondescript envelope to mail. This will continue to happen regardless of what the Senate does or doesn't do next.

Louisiana AG Liz Murrill bemoans that telemedicine Rx plus shield laws allowing Rx across state lines lead to 900 abortions a month in LA; some folks later go to emergency room. Evidence-based witness from @prh.org later notes people are ordering pills BECAUSE states like Louisiana banned abortion
Bernie Sanders: Who should make the decision regarding her own body? Shall it be a woman to be the United States Senate, governors, Attorney Generals? Who should make that decision?
Nisha Verma M.D., M.P.H., FACOG: I do want to highlight some misinformation that we've been hearing around the source of some of the harm that we're seeing right now. A lot of the cases that we're hearing about are a direct result of abortion bans and restrictions. People are desperate because they cannot get the care that they need in their communities with their trusted clinicians and people in their communities in the way that they need. And that is why we are seeing these cases come up. It is a direct result of abortion bans and restrictions. Access makes people safer.

Folks, it’s high time we cleared something up: abortion pills and “morning after” pills are two different things. You take the morning after pill when you have the ingredients for tacos. You take abortion pills when you have an existing taco you don’t want to or can’t have.

if you are “pro-choice” and also transphobic, you are not serious about undoing the control, white supremacy, and patriarchy that make abortion bans possible and you are certainly no ally to bodily autonomy or self-determination

Abortion is health care, but it can also be an act of hope or a prayer or a wish or a Hail Mary for the lives patients want to protect or build or keep imagining. Some people don’t want to be pregnant, they have an abortion, they go on to lead the lives they imagined. Abortion is worth celebrating.

appreciated these insights from @prh.org fellow Dr. Mariana Montes, an obstetric anesthesiologist
""In no scenario would I ever recommend to a patient to 'tough it out,'" she says, referring to President Trump's exact words. "You do not 'tough out' an infection. You do not 'tough out' back pain."

That mindset sets patients up to think "that they must tough it out in order for them to have a healthy fetus or a healthy pregnancy, and that's actually false," Montes says."

The same bs they're spewing about autism and tylenol is the same bs they're spewing about trans people's healthcare. It's the exact same playbook and the fact that the media can see through one and not the other is a damning indictment of how complicit they are in the attack on trans lives.

Abortion rights shouldn’t be a bargaining chip lawmakers use to negotiate what they consider to be “legitimate” political issues. Abortion is inextricably linked with economic, climate, and health care policy. It is a legitimate political issue. You bend on abortion, you’ll bend on anything.

It’s really ok to be abortion positive. It can be true that abortion is difficult for some, and easy and affirming for others. Childbirth is also difficult for some and easy and affirming for others. If you’re only policing abortion positivity, might be worth examining where you learned that from.

When you’re pregnant and in a medical emergency, you deserve care immediately. But today, the Trump administration made that harder by rescinding EMTALA’s guidance around abortion care. Let’s call this what it is: an abandonment of responsibility to the lives of pregnant people.
