I have now also signed all or almost all copies at the Powell's at Beaverton and the main Burnside, even though they may not be labeled as autographed yet. If you are wanting one!

Thank you for your service. It will not go unrewarded. But I will also requisition a Borne for the monkey.

At the Powell's Hawthorne location in Portland, I signed every one of my books, in spec fic and on their bestseller lists. Everything of mine in the store, including a Steampunk Bible. They may not all have an autograph sticker until later today, but they are autographed, if yer looking.

A year until Abdication. A blink of an eye.
In twenty-seven minutes, you will lose the ability to breathe without screaming in that space. In twenty-seven minutes, you will lose your whole team to the evaporating blast around the tidal pool where Ghost Bird and Control disappear. In twenty-nine minutes, you will stand at the edge of the hole, screaming, and what is still down there will know the measure of you and transform you. The afterglow and the beatific spray and this sense that Ghost Bird still existed there, off to the side, so he couldn’t see her, observing him. This world, that world. You’re drifting between.

Artist Jeremy Zerfoss and I are working on a long story that takes the form of old-school video game still shots with A thru D decision points for the player and chatroom stuff below that advances the story as well. It's kind of liberating to be creating just the best screens of a video game.

Beanpole (2019) is set in post WW2 Leningrad. It is beautifully shot and acted and utterly devastating. Iya and Masha, veterans of the war, search for meaning and hope in the struggle to rebuid their lives.

Fifth Halloween rec because you are ravenous book cannibals is Dark Matter by Aase Berg. A truly visceral and transcendent collection translated by Johannes Göransson that's like Scott Walker's Tilt album in poetry form. Although totally unique and beautiful and unsettling.

Fourth Halloween rec since you ghouls are greedy for book flesh: Michel Bernanos' The Other Side of the Mountain. A truly disturbing voyage gives way to landfall in a harrowing, haunting, and horrific place. A direct influence on my novel Annihilation and also available in The Weird antho I coedited

Second Halloween rec, since you weirdlings are restless, is Flicker by Theodore Roszak. The ultimate in film horror. Sophisticated, dark, original. Go in knowing as little as possible. And try to find a copy without a stupid cover. Most covers for this book are boring, alas.

Annihilation always makes Halloween lists, so I thought I'd do a thread of creepy reads. Starting today with a flat-out modern masterpiece, Max Lury's No Ghosts. Thoroughly contemporary and disturbing grounded in deep characterization, and, in part, outdoing Back Rooms while also its own thing. 1
