Op-ed: Agricultural ‘Efficiency’ Is a False Promise
Democracy demands a thriving food system that supports not only our land, but our farmers and communities.

Corporate consolidation that hollows out local economies, puts family farms out of business, and degrades the land and water isn't progress. At FarmSTAND, we're fighting to build a better food system that feeds people, not corporate profits.

When It Comes to Worker Protections, ‘Big Ag Rules the Roost’
Safety experts say a lack of inspectors and other cutbacks could result in more farmworker deaths and injuries.

The result: tragedies like the six Colorado dairy workers who died last year in a manure pit filled with toxic gas. The company was only fined $85,000. That's not accountability--that's permission to treat workers as disposable.

When governments cut ag workers out of legal protections, people die. Decades of Big Ag lobbying to exclude ag from oversight and a defanged OSHA have left agricultural workers unprotected from deadly workplace conditions.

When ICE raids take workers off the line, hurting profits, the meat industry sometimes complains for a day. But Big Ag corporations don't want justice for immigrants. They want and benefit from the climate of fear that keeps workers vulnerable to exploitation. buff.ly/I76weAT

Big Ag companies like Smithfield have little regard for the safety of their workers - that's why ag workers have some of the highest injury rates of any sector. As long as profits come before people, tragedies like this will continue. Read more on Meatingplace ➡️ buff.ly/T4LXkr3

Tragic news out of Monmouth, IL - on 9/14, a worker was killed at a Smithfield plant. We don't know the circumstances, but we do know that the plant was fined by OSHA earlier this year. According to Meatingplace, safety procedures were not followed, exposing workers to "amputation hazards."
