Congratulation to @ninaelkadi.com for winning a 2026 CCNow Journalism Award for her @sentientmedia.org story on the impact of alfalfa in Arizona. "Elkadi’s narrative is “accessible, engaging, and rich in detail,” judges said, and it represents an outstanding public service." 👏 (link to the story 👇)

Wondering how long it took for this to get from the idea phase to publication? Spoiler: a long time. I wrote a little inside baseball about it:

"Elkadi’s narrative is “accessible, engaging, and rich in detail,” judges said, and it represents an outstanding public service. Three months after the story published, the state moved to bring La Paz’s groundwater under regulation." Yay, biggest thanks goes to the sources, always.

This reminds me of @ninaelkadi.com’s story on how more than half the fines to confined livestock operators in Iowa are for administrative violations. The state agency in charge of the enforcement of the Clean Water Act has neither the resources nor the appetite for more substantive work.

"There are now approximately 1,720 total OSHA inspectors responsible for covering 144 million workers across many industries—meaning each inspector is responsible for the health and safety of 84,000 workers on 11.6 million worksites."

“To be clear: I would have voted in support of this Farm Bill,” Iowa Democratic Senate nominee Josh Turek wrote in an August 11 press release. He continued to write that the Democratic party “failed” farmers “by letting perfect be the enemy of good.” My latest on the mythology Turek perpetuates:

Iowa Democratic Senate nominee Josh Turek wrote that he would've voted in support of the August 6 farm bill, and that the Democratic party “failed” farmers “by letting perfect be the enemy of good.” The farm bill is not just about farmers. It’s also about the 42 million people relying on SNAP.

If you get cancer from a pesticide that the EPA reviewed and doesn’t require a cancer warning for, you can’t sue that company. So what can you do? The High Court says you should petition the EPA. A multiyear side project while you’re getting chemotherapy infusions.
