Thanks. I feel like I broke through a block I was having last year (I was working on a novel) to get back to poetry by actually including my sort of process/philosophical questions in the poem itself.

Thank you for reading. I wrote it after reading a news article about the Hickory Hill neighborhood of Memphis. Too common.

I'm having trouble talking myself into the feeling this whole thing ain't broken... but I have a new poem called "Hickory Hill," published in Oyster River Pages' glorious annual issue, and I'd be thrilled if you read it (or listened to me read it) www.oysterriverpages.com/edie-meade

"Hickory Hill," Poetry by Edie Meade — Oyster River Pages
“Hickory Hill” by Edie Meade is a haunting, visceral prose poem that confronts a devastating tragedy while questioning poetry’s ability to hold, witness, or make meaning from it.

I read this intentionally slowly to grapple with the weight of the content and the beauty of the language and how the latter supported the former. Truly, one of the best, most stunning books I’ve ever read. Probably the best. It’s an example of what art, particularly the novel, can aspire to.

It is tragic and the politicians at the highest level are responsible. I lost my own dad, in a hospital that had refrigerated trucks out back at one point, and no one but me wore a respirator in the ICU so full there were dying patients in the hallways.

Maybe we are in different social circles, but the "trauma" from lockdowns I saw was mainly selfish anger over inconvenience. Some people had to go to work in hazardous conditions. They aren't the ones crying about staying home.
