Pentecost is a major festival in the Christian calendar that takes place 50 days after Easter. It marks the moment when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, empowering them to begin the Church’s mission in the world. The story is found in Acts 2 in the New Testament. The disciples were gathered together in Jerusalem, when a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire appeared and rested on each of them.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages (tongues)—languages they had not learned. Peter stood up and preached a bold sermon explaining that this was the fulfilment of prophecy, and that Jesus—crucified and risen—was Lord and Messiah. About 3,000 people were baptised and became followers of Jesus that day. (Acts 2: 1-21)
Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church, because it's the day the followers of Jesus were empowered by the Holy Spirit to begin their public ministry. It marks the first time the Holy Spirit was poured out on all believers, fulfilling Jesus’ promise that they would receive “power from on high” (Luke 24:49).
Pentecost signals the beginning of the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel to all nations, a mission that continues today. The fact that people heard the message in their own languages shows that the Gospel is for EVERYONE, regardless of language, culture, or background. Priests wear red vestments, symbolic of the flames that rested on the disciples. In modern times, the custom has extended to the lay people of the congregation wearing red clothing in celebration as well.
God of wind and flame,
As You empowered the first disciples,
so empower us today to be
Your Church—
a people of peace, justice, and joy.
Help us to live not in fear,
but in faith,
not in silence,
but in Spirit-filled witness.
May Your flame burn brightly
in our lives,
so that through us, the world may know Your grace and glory.
