This lovely item is 10 years old today. A decade of delights and conversations about floodlights, outfield players in goal and spotting grounds from trains.

It's Thursday and that can mean only one thing; a new blog is up. This week we are back down the smoke, this time to celebrate a new arrival to the fanzine family, one that weights in at 272 pages in the first edition, bet they don't keep that up! footballfanzineculture.blog/2026/10/01/f...

In the 1980s life as a football supporter was a demoralising experience. While some fans turned to violence, many more turned to typewriters, Tippex and staple guns to create a movement that transformed a bleak time into a hopeful one. Discover more in FANZINE by @danielgraywriter.bsky.social

My #FloodlightFriday is this snippet from @danielgraywriter.bsky.social latest book ‚Fanzine‘. If you can afford, buy and read it! Is there an English word for ‚Kreuzschatten‘? That‘s the one thing I miss most in modern stadiums.

„Floodlights, their pylons increasingly usurped by bulbs fixed to new stands' roofs, were frequently mourned. In late 1991, Dave Rowley regretted 'the passing of Wolves' greatest asset - The Molineux Floodlights'. He also highlighted the practical implications of clubs' pylon destruction; how else would away supporters locate grounds in the dark?
The following September, Quincy Wagstaff of Bristol City fanzine Bounty Hunter cooed and sighed over Ashton Gate's foodlights. Their dismissal was a 'wanton, mindless act of vandal-ism...We just cannot come to terms with the fact that those four mighty, majestic towers of glory, splendour and, um, electricity, are simply no longer there? When approaching the ground, the lights' absence created an 'overwhelming' sense of 'emptiness and loss'.
For a night match, 'The great sheets of light that those four soaring towers of steel threw down onto the ground took your breath away. Now, Ashton Gate melted in with the rest of the skyline…“
