Reading is inexpensive entertainment. Buying every book that catches your eye is a slightly different economic model, but the underlying principle remains sound ... at least that is what I keep telling myself 😊

We’re breaking the shop again. Yes, there are still bits from the last round to finish, but we found far more space than expected behind the counter, under the stairs & couldn’t leave it alone. What’s going in? A surprise! Please bear with us for a while - it will be worth it! 🔨📚
Inside Chapters Bookstore during refurbishment. Two workers stand beside partly assembled black shelving beneath the staircase, with a ladder, tools and building materials on the floor. Tables of books remain in the foreground.

Contentious opinion ... what do we think? Is it revisiting an old friend, conducting further research or wasting time that could be spent on reading something new?

Louise Kennedy came in to sign Stations & I missed her because of family commitments. Possibly for the best: I’d have embarrassed myself fawning. Thank you, Louise. I wrote a long read about this extraordinary book, but my clearest thought remains: read it. Signed copies are in store.

Tilda Swinton has taken charge of some of the weekend trades! This 1990s American film tie-in of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando is now in Secondhand, alongside Penguin Moderns, Paul Lynch’s Grace and a wonderfully mixed stack of recent favourites. She insisted on standing at the front!

Cooking in a Bedsitter has arrived in Secondhand. Is that a mouse hanging on the cover? 🐭 Inside: a lovingly handwritten recipe involving beans, chilli, “thickish brown gravy” and fruit added at the end. We cherish the note. We have some questions about dinner.
A handwritten recipe on a torn sheet of lined paper found inside the book. It begins by simmering red beans, then adds onion, chilli powder, mushrooms and meat. The beans are stirred into “thickish brown gravy”, with fruit added near the end.Worn black paperback cover of Katharine Whitehorn’s Cooking in a Bedsitter. A candle stands beside a row of hooks holding a cup, food, a knife and a small furry object that looks rather like a mouse.

“I cannot live without books.” Thomas Jefferson said it first, but generations of readers have continued to demonstrate it by carrying three books on every two-day holiday .... Out of interest ... do you have a book in your bag or pocket at the moment? Exactly!

They arrived. They actually arrived! Our copies of Threshing Day by Rebecca Yarros are here & just look at them! The silvery cover, the illustrated endpapers, the dragons inside. We’ve spent an entirely reasonable amount of time opening one to show each other the pictures.

Twelve poets walk into a bookshop... unfortunately, I can’t remember the punchline because I stopped to read Seamus Heaney. Come for Heaney, Walcott, Sassoon and Rupi Kaur. Stay to see who else is on the Secondhand shelves ... there seems to be a great need for poetry right now
