I love these books - they were a secret language between me, my dad, my brother & my brother's friends - I feel ridiculously nostalgic seeing them again. Lucky whoever finds them in Secondhand - hope you enjoy the fish!

RESEARCHERS, LOOK OUT 👀 A huge stack of Dublin Historical Record back issues has just landed! Published by the Old Dublin Society since 1938, these are a treasure trove of properly researched history - trams, norse Dublin, railways, old streets, churches, printers, policing, maps - just to start!

I’ve just noticed The Woodlanders peeping in from the corner of this photo. It has a very special place in my heart - it was the first classic I read that genuinely shifted how I saw the world & probably the first time I understood what a novel could really do. So quietly beautiful.
A close-up of a shelf of Folio Society books, mostly in slipcases. Titles include English Eccentrics, Nelson and Emma, My Life and Times and French Short Stories. At the far right, partly hidden, is Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders in a brown slipcase.

It has been a VERY good few weeks for Folio Society books in Secondhand. 📚 Chaucer, Tacitus, Gibbon, Burke, Josephus, Shakespeare, Restoration London, the Ottoman Empire, Arab history, Greek myths… and this is only a selection. Beautiful books are dangerous things in a bookshop.

This is one of those bits of Irish history that sounds suspiciously like someone has written a film. Six Fenian prisoners. Fremantle Prison. An American whaling ship. A 28-hour escape through storm & surf. Historian Michael B. Barry popped in to sign Catalpa. Copies now instore & online! 💚📚
Three photographs of Irish historian and author Michael B. Barry visiting Chapters Bookstore Dublin with his new book Catalpa: The Epic Story of the Greatest Prison Rescue in Irish History.

In the first he stands smiling outside the Chapters Parnell Street shopfront holding the book beneath the Bookshop of the Year 2025 signage. In the second he smiles inside the shop, holding Catalpa in front of the Chapters bookshelves.

In the third he is seated at a table signing copies, with stacks of the book beside him ready for Chapters readers.

It’s 186 years to the day since a man called Thomas O’Conor wrote a report about a stone figure on a church in Kiltinane, County Tipperary. This would be unremarkable were it not for what the statue looked like, because this was the first written use of the term Sheela-na-gig
