The ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion has passed at Green Party conference. While there are many parts of the motion I can agree with, there are some that I could not, so I did not vote for it. Here is a joint statement from the Green Party leadership team and all of us Green MPs:
Joint statement:

As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.
We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.
We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.
We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.
And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.
We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

I'm so pleased Zack made a Fair Rents Guarantee a key part of his conference speech - keeping up pressure on govt on behalf of the millions of renters who have no choice but to transfer an unsustainable and growing proportion of their income straight into the bank accounts of landlords.

I've pushed the government to end unaffordable rents every day I’ve been an MP, and before then. It's a national scandal that thousands of ordinary people are forced to limit themselves & their life chances just to keep up with sky-high rents. This would be a much-needed reset👇

I wrote to Miatta Fahnbulleh to urge her to publish a Fossil Fuel Transition Roadmap ahead of COP31 in November. Ending all new licenses & publishing a clear roadmap will show that the UK is not just calling for a global transition, but delivering one.
The post is a graphic. At the top, white text on a light green background says:

"The Government must publish a fossil fuel transition roadmap before COP31"

The rest of the image shows the top of a letter to Miatta Fahnbulleh.

Dear Secretary of State,

RE: Securing a fossil fuel transition roadmap for the UK

I am writing on behalf of the Green Party of England and Wales to urge your department to move swiftly to publish a comprehensive fossil fuel transition roadmap for the UK ahead of COP31 in November." The post is a text box on a dark green background. In the box is a parliamentary paper-style letter extract that reads:

"The impacts of the climate and nature emergency are escalating at a terrifyingly dangerous rate, as global temperatures continue to climb rapidly.

At the same time, the poorest peoples of the world, with the least historic responsibility for climate emissions, continue to bear the brunt of climate breakdown.

As you will be aware, nearly a year ago, at COP30 in Belém, the UK endorsed a fossil fuels transition roadmap. More recently, at the Santa Marta TAFF conference in April, the UK reiterated its support for such a roadmap. Since then, France, Germany and the Netherlands have all published plans.

In this context, it is unacceptable that the government is still yet to publish a comprehensive domestic roadmap"The post is a text box on a dark green background. In the box is a parliamentary paper-style letter extract that reads:

"The UK cannot claim global leadership at COP31 while expanding fossil fuels at home.

Ending all new licenses – including Jackdaw and Rosebank - and publishing a clear
roadmap will demonstrate that the UK is not merely calling for global transition, but
actively delivering the domestic plan required to deliver one.

Can your department confirm that such a roadmap will be published before COP31?
And will you meet with me to discuss how we can work together to advance this
strategy?

Yours sincerely,
Carla Denyer MP

I have said before and will again: any electoral reform commission must NOT rule out a change of system BEFORE the next election if needed. We cannot risk a minority vote handing a huge majority to any party that would take a shredder to democracy itself.

HOPE IS NOT JUST A SLOGAN, IT NEEDS TO MEAN REAL CHANGE

ZACK POLANSKI
LEADER OF THE GREEN PARTY

"Unlike his predecessor, we have a PM who talks like he gets it. But sadly like his predecessor he isn’t prepared to break from the powerful and wealthy interests that have created an inequality, affordability and a climate crisis.

Hope is not just a slogan, it needs to mean real change. The speech today had no wealth taxes, no rent controls, no water nationalisation and a strong hint of more North Sea drilling.

It is disappointing that we have a country ready to break from the last 40 years, a Labour government with the majority to do it, and yet what we see are more half measures, reannouncements and tinkering."

There's no place in a climate emergency for expanding one of the UK’s biggest polluters. A third runway at Heathrow would benefit a tiny minority (wealthy frequent flyers) at huge cost to the environment and local community. The Government can and must put a stop to this now.

Thank you especially to those who sent me supportive messages during my time away, sharing your own stories of burnout and recovery, and words of advice. I have been blown away by your kindness. 🫶

I recognise that I have been enormously fortunate to have been able to take this time, and that many people faced with the same situation would not be so lucky. No one should be penalised for being too unwell to work, and no one should have to jeopardise recovery because of job insecurity. This is something I am determined to change.

As anyone who’s ever had serious health issues can tell you, recovery isn’t linear, but I am making good progress, so I will be heading back to Parliament this week on a phased return.I’m really looking forward to getting back into things and working alongside my amazing colleagues and inspiring constituents to make a positive impact together.
And so it was great timing that Zack visited Bristol again this weekend (appearing at Forwards Festival yesterday), and we were able to catch up over coffee this morning.

In a world where the UK government’s response to wildfires and droughts ravaging our communities is to temporarily ban disposable BBQs (whilst still considering expanding oil and gas production in the North Sea 🤯), the need for us Green politicians has never been clearer. There is much to do.

Onwards and upwards 💚

I have written to the Prime Minister and Bridget Phillipson, calling for the cruel and confusing EHRC Code of Practice to be rejected. Legislative action must be taken to create an equalities framework that protects trans people’s safety, dignity and humanity.
Image is a letter. It reads: Dear Keir and Bridget,
Reject the EHRC’s Code of Practice
I am writing as Interim Women and Equalities lead of the Parliamentary Green Party to raise
serious concerns over proposed guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission,
which is not fit for purpose and will harm trans people living in the UK.
The Code of Practice for services, public functions, and associations is the culmination of
years of well-funded campaigns to drive a minority group out of British public life. It sets out
a system of segregation where trans people are excluded from services and spaces that reflect
their gender, and in some cases also excluded from services and spaces that reflect their sex
assigned at birth. Where unisex facilities exist, trans people will be forced into them. Where
they do not exist, trans people will be left with nowhere to go.
Your own Equalities Impact Assessment1 on the code admits there will be a significant
impact on those with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment - from forcing trans
people to out themselves by using disabled toilets to putting trans women at greater risk of
sexual violence by making them use men’s services.
The Code of Practice is both cruel and confusing. Inconsistencies between the Code of
Practice and its Equalities Impact Assessment, the Gender Recognition Act and the European
Convention on Human Rights will leave organisations and service providers at risk of
litigation from all sides. Frontline staff in spaces like cafes, gyms, and offices will be forced
to police gender, whilst the costs of creating self-contained gender neutral facilities are
estimated by your advisors as reaching £600m, which the government is providing no
funding to cover.2 I am pleased to see associations, like the Women’s Institute and
Girlguiding, given a potential route to serving trans and cisgender women, but this does not
counteract the pain caused by the majority of the guidance.

Letter continued: By enacting this guidance, trans people will simply be scapegoated. Research by Translucent
found there was just one complaint to English Unitary Authorities in 2025 concerning trans
women’s use of single-sex spaces, such as toilets and changing rooms.3 By refusing to act,
your government is once again playing politics with trans people’s lives, rather than tackling
real problems, like the soaring cost of living, rising inequality and the ongoing climate
crisis.

Trans people of all ages and backgrounds exist in communities across the country - and
always have. They have every right to thrive just as their cisgender friends, family members,
and colleagues do. When Labour brought in the Gender Recognition Act in 2004 it promised
trans people they could live their lives with peace, privacy, and dignity. Now you are
breaking that promise.
I believe there is a real risk of trans people being essentially segregated from public spaces. I
urge you to withdraw the code and take legislative action to create an equalities framework
that protects trans people’s safety, dignity and humanity.

Following my doctor’s advice, I am taking some time away from work for health reasons. My office will be functioning as usual and my staff are there to support all my constituents who need help, so please don't hesitate to get in touch. See my full statement below.
I've worked in politics for over a decade: as a Councillor, for an MEP, as the Co-Leader of the Green Party, and now it is a privilege to serve as the MP for Bristol Central.

Over the last few years, I have been struggling with persistent health issues, and I have been trying to manage these alongside the long hours and significant responsibility my work entails. It has become clear that this is not an effective strategy and that doing so is inhibiting my ability to recover. Having taken advice from my doctor, I will be taking several weeks off in order to try to get back to full health.

I want to be open about the fact that what I am suffering from is burnout – and the mental and physical symptoms that arise from it. Burnout is a condition that does not tend to get better on its own. If left unmanaged, it can worsen and increase your risk of long-term health problems.

This is something that I know will be familiar to many people in all walks of life, especially those working in high-stress environments and in people-facing professions such as nurses, teachers and social workers. But it is also something that too often is not openly discussed. I hope that by sharing my own struggles, I can help in some small way to combat the stigma around it and contribute to a more open conversation.

Making the decision to take time off for my health was incredibly difficult. It is an honour to represent the people of Bristol Central. And I know that by stepping back for a little while now, I will ultimately be able to return as a better champion for the community that means so much to me. I am grateful for the kindness and understanding I know my constituents will show if they see me out and about while I am recovering.

I want to say a huge thank you to all of my colleagues in the Green Party, in Parliament and in my Constituency team for their understanding and support. I also want to thank Nadia Whittome MP for the leadership she showed in 2021 when she took a leave of a…

The Government must use the Energy Independence Bill to give workers a seat at the table as workplaces adapt to the climate, nature, and cost-of-living crises. That's why I'm asking Ed Miliband to grant statutory rights to trade union future-proofing reps.
Dear Ed,
Re: Statutory rights for trade union “future-proofing reps” in the Energy Independence Bill
I am writing on behalf of the Green Party to ask you to grant statutory rights to union ‘future-proofing reps’ in the forthcoming Energy Independence Bill. This would create a legal requirement on employers to include trade union representatives in workplace planning related to
decarbonisation, and is key to delivering a just transition.

As you know, the UK is entering the most significant period of industrial change in decades. Energy, manufacturing, construction, and transport will need to rapidly transform, driven by the need to address both the climate and cost-of-living crises and end our reliance on expensive and insecure fossil fuels. This has only become more pressing in light of economic fallout from the US-Israel illegal war on Iran.

These changes are already – and will continue to – have huge repercussions on the workforces currently employed in these industries. Already the number of jobs supported by the oil and gas
industry in the UK has halved in the last decade due to declining North Sea reserves, and many are facing worsening conditions.

It is vital that workers have a defined role at the heart of this change.
Whilst we welcome many of the steps your government has taken in the past year in this regard, we are concerned that workforce planning is still too often an afterthought, and too many workers are finding out about major changes once decisions are already made.

Already workers up and down the country are taking this into their own hands. When the last coal power station closed in Ratcliffe-on-Soar in 2024, reps from Prospect, GMB and Unite identified new jobs for workers to move into, backed up by funding and support for employees to retrain for these new roles.

Statutory rights for future-proofing reps would mean workers have a seat at the table from the start.

Employers would be legally required to involve reps in workforce planning, skills, retraining, redeployment and job continuity linked to decarbonisation. It would ensure the workforce are consulted early on major investment and restructuring decisions linked to industrial change, and give them oversight to ensure public money supports decent jobs. And worker reps would be given protected time to carry out transition-related duties without loss of pay.

Futureproofing reps will be of particular importance in industries like oil and gas, where it is essential that jobs are protected as we phase-out fossil fuel production. They will also have a crucial role to play in workplaces that are changing significantly as a result of steps to decarbonise, such as steel plants or car factories.

We know that giving trade unions statutory roles delivers change. Workplaces with union health and safety reps have half the serious injury rates than those without, and the UK’s injury rate has fallen
dramatically since the introduction of statutory rights for these in 1977.
The Trades Union Congress has long called for statutory recognition for reps to support workplace transitions. These rights also have support from environmental groups including Greenpeace, Uplift,
Friends of the Earth Scotland, Platform and Oil Change International.
This proposal also builds on my Energy and Employment Rights Bill introduced in the last parliamentary session.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss both my bill and this proposal
with you further.
Yours sincerely,
Carla Denyer MP

It was a pleasure to meet Mohammed, a Palestinian student whose case I took to the Home Office after the devastation in Gaza made taking up his @bristoluni.bsky.social scholarship incredibly difficult. It should not take an MP intervention to do this. We must do better for the next cohort.

‘Cost of Rent Day’ in England fell on Monday, representing when the average tenant has earned enough to cover their annual rent. Renting in this country is out of control. Our makeshift graph after an afternoon of talking to renters in Bristol told a sorry story…

The trans community in this country is treated appalling. They deserve to be treated with dignity, like everyone else. Piers Morgan's obsession with this question is bizarre and disrespectful.
An article from the Metro titled "Piers Morgan brilliantly shut down after asking 'weird question' on BBC". below the headline is a picture of Rachel Millward and Piers Morgan on BBC Question Time.

Starmer just described his government as an "activist Labour party" 🤔 #KingsSpeech

This was a really disappointing King's Speech from the Govt. What the country & Govt needed was a fundamental reset. One that brings about a transformative agenda to tackle the major challenges we face as a nation. This speech failed to do that.
