A while back I observed that we should have a cookie tasting party where everyone should try to bring a flavor of cookie that no one else has. This is their entry.

How it started #bitsandmortar
Publisher Coalition Forms Pro-PDF Pro-retailer Initiative Bits and Mortar.
(August 9, 2010 -- Indianapolis, IN) The past several years have seen growth in consumer
acceptance of PDFs and eBooks. With an eye on using this to drive customers to their friendly
local game stores, a coalition of publishers have formed Bits and Mortar, a pro-retailer, pro-
brick-and-mortar, pro-PDF, pro-eBook initiative.
Bits and Mortar uses simple methods and existing technology to allow retailers the ability to
quickly and easily offer their customers PDF versions of the physical games they purchase in
store at no additional charge.
The Bits and Mortar publisher coalition includes Arc Dream Publishing, Cellar Games, Cubicle 7,
Evil Hat Productions, Pelgrane Press and Rogue Games.
“We love real, physical brick and mortar game stores, and we want to see them survive — and
thrive — even as the digital content options for gaming become more prevalent,” said Fred
Hicks of Evil Hat Productions.
“Today’s game-buying customers want the best of both worlds: the portability of an e-book,
and the lasting durability of one made out of paper, glue, and ink. They want to be able to
support their favorite local game stores, and they want to be able to support their favorite
publishers,” Hicks said. “The Bits and Mortar initiative is all about making sure they don’t have
to choose one or the other. We want them to choose both, every time.”
Richard Iorio of Rogue Games added, “By offering free PDFs together with the books sold in
game stores, Bits and Mortar publishers are giving retailers a free value-add that keeps
customers coming to the store, and in turn keeps that store in business. Everybody wins.”

People need to remember - this isn't a binary choice of love/hate. You can tell people [this thing] isn't your favorite without saying you hate it. But that's still no reason to start a podcast.

Realised I haven't posted this here yet: This is every possible numerically-balanced d20 layout. If you know a dice-maker please pass this on to them - it'll make their dice roll fairer on average. #Dice #TTRPG
Image of six icosahedron nets with the faces numbered. Text goes into detail:
"All d20 layouts that are fully balanced numerically"
There are only six number layouts (and their reflections) for a d20 that are optimally fair.
The most common layout (where the 20 is surrounded by 2, 14, 8) is NOT numerically balanced, apart from by opposite-face sum (Which only helps negate bias from a squashed shape).
d20 dice with the above layouts should roll the expected value (10.5) on average, even if their shape is squashed (common for very old, cheap, or melted dice), their center of mass is offset (common in dice with inserts, multiple materials, air bubbles), or are not fully isohedral where faces/edges are slightly different (common for handcrafted gem/glass/metal dice, and dice not evenly tumbled).
Key features:
- Opposite faces always sum 21 (two faces with an average value of 10.5)
- Faces around each vertex always sum 53 or 52 (five faces with average value of 10.6 or 10.4)
- A face's three adjacent faces always sum 32 or 31 (three faces with average value of 10.666 or 10.333)
Feel free to use any of thes layouts above for your own dice to make them fairer overall.

As I once explained in my LiveJournal days: * a 32-page Pathfinder adventure has 20,000 words. * a 99.9% typo-free 32-page adventure would have 20 typos. * that’s a typo every 1.5 pages. * reducing that would delay every book a significant amount.

As a retailer, I'll note that NPR Independent Radio is exclusively talking about big box stores. Honestly, trying to deal with all the independent FLGSs would be harder, it was just a something that hit me.

I'm old enough to remember CheapAss Games envelopes. The game would come with rules and anything that could be printed on card stock, then a list of object you need to provide: dice, meeples, etc. I'm wondering if that can be done these days.

Hot take from the mass market industry: Keep pitching games. Yes we are scrambling on manufacturing but the appetite for games is still high. Do not get discouraged. Aim for products with low costs but when you pitch try to think of 3 versions of your product that still deliver the same experience.

A fellow store owner created this simple graphic for how tariffs work.
A diagram showing a real world example of a US distributor being charge by both a foreign manufacturer, and our government with a tariff. They pass this real cost to retailers the price of a D&D miniature going from $2.99 to $3.59. Not shown is the fact that the manufacturer claims the miniature should have the same MSRP, but just make less money for the store.

✔️ Ensure the name and cover create a unified gestalt. ✔️ Keep names as short as needed, though an unusually long name can sometimes spark curiosity. ✔️ A great name should "ring" with people—hard to define, but powerful when it happens. 🎲✂️(4/5)
