My understanding of the "rule" was no more than 3 same tiles repeated in any cardinal direction. I recall it was often cited by commenters as a sort of "gotcha" under folks' screenshots, then eventually joked about almost to the point of absurdity, compared to "scriptures," etc. Very fun & funny.

The "rule" was mostly a running joke, but a good modern example would be Beloved Rapture by @rapturousgames.bsky.social (dev in the scene from way back). Densely detailed areas that use a lot of map layering tricks to throw off the tile grid as much as possible. 👍 bsky.app/profile/rapt...

In the RPGMaker scene back in the day, a complicated version of this called the "Three Tile Rule" was talked about quite a bit. One of a few "home remedies" to make your environments made of repurposed and slightly recolored Final Fantasy tilesets look More Epic.

Very cool game– did a little reading about it after seeing this post and learned a novelization was made in 95 (published by Prima, of guidebook fame). Also a US design lead for a JP-published game, very unusual!

Gives that feeling of playing Magi-Nation on GBC back in the day. Something very realistic but also magical in these tiles. The sense of scale is great. Excellent work as always.

Shining Soul & its sequel are awesome. Beatemup/topdown dungeon crawl hybrid with a ton of different character classes. Great art style too. Good multiplayer via link cable (but impossible to emulate 😮‍💨)
