Many people have asked us how to start an independent Diamond open-access journal. So we have written "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Starting an Independent Diamond OA Journal". We hope it helps many more community-led journals follow. systems-ecology.org/index.php/se... #DiamondOA #OpenAccess

Reference lists can reproduce inequalities in scholarly publishing. A simple equity check can help reveal how much our citations rely on paywalled, APC-based, or more accessible publishing routes. Read more at: peeer.net/2026/09/18/a... #BetterPublishing

Paper @science.org today led by Junna Wang and my @ucdavis.bsky.social colleague Xiaoli Dong. 7-16% of plants at risk of extinction under climate change, largely from vanishing climates, not slow dispersal. But plants will move, reshaping local species composition www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Excited to see our paper published in @science.org! Modeling the redistribution of ~68,000 plant species, we show climate-driven extinctions are caused more by habitat loss than limited dispersal. Work initiated during my postdoc at @ucdavis.bsky.social and pushed through publication by Junna Wang.

After 4yr of hard work to compare empirical species range positions' shifts from the #BioShifts DB against predictions from niche-based models trained on climate & tailored to methodological attributes of each species & study, we found species shift ahead of models' predictions! 🦋 shorturl.at/vOmCw

Does genetic diversity help species keep up with, or tolerate, climate change? 🌡️🌍 Our new BioShifts paper shows that high genetic diversity 🧬: 1) Reduces range contractions under fast warming 2) Accelerates range expansion under moderate warming onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Genuine talent doesn't emerge from a vacuum. It results from a massive effort: try, fail, learn, and repeat until failure becomes success, whatever that means. Running the loop for long enough might get you there, hopefully. Offloading the grind to a machine surely won't.

📖Published📖 In our new perspective article, Miao et al. explore the transformative potential of multimodal language models for biodiversity research and discusses several possible applications in biodiversity research 👇 buff.ly/m040OvA
Illustration of multimodal generative models. In multimodal generative models, the encoders focus on constructing a shared feature space, aligning features from various input modalities such as images, audio, text and other modalities. Then the decoders utilize this shared feature space to generate any output modalities from any input modalities of data, such as creating images from a language description and vice versa.
