Telstra have released the full report for their recent significant outage: www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/... Summary of findings:
Overall, we found 4 overarching findings as an outcome of this investigation:
• Unclear and insufficient NTP ownership and lack of recognition of its importance as a Sovereign Function (as discussed in section 3.1 below) which led to weakness in this area and not treating it as a high risk function of the network for the purpose of design, operations, resources and investment prioritisation.
• No end-to-end architecture for mobile core timing, including client design and behaviour, and no architecture and design oversight that provides the 2nd line support to challenge and steer design.
• Insufficient technical expertise for NTP and the need for stronger competency and more curiosity to investigate when something looks wrong.
• Increase attention to the operation and management process discipline in all areas. There were several instances of insufficient execution discipline for NTP including change management, configuration control and incident management including elements of attention to detail, record keeping and documentation and follow through

All the posts and photos today about Melbourne’s new G class trams got me thinking about trams named G. Yeah look, this is going to be nerdy, but there’s more to it than you might think. And would it surprise you that these new trams are not actually Melbourne’s first ever G class trams? (1/23)

The first TGV was named "Patrick" and for years I wondered why. The legend has it this was the name of one of the first driver's sons but this orange-skivvied little chap who pre-dates the first run by four years seems more plausible an explanation! www.leparisien.fr/video/video-....

After more than 55 years serving the people of New South Wales, tomorrow is the last ever run in public service of a V set interurban double deck electric train. So this is the perfect time for a photographic tribute to these venerable, hard working and much loved trains. 1/n

Today's historic photo of the day: Exactly 37 years ago today, Y1 class #tram no 613 running a summer Sundays trip to St Kilda Beach, stops in St Kilda Road, Melbourne, January 15, 1989. On Summer Sundays in the 1980s, extra trams were run to the tourist […] [Original post on mastodon.online]
A saloon type bogie tram in M&MTB green and cream livery runs away from us along a wide tree-lined boulevard in a metropolitan setting. A passenger is leaving the tram through an open door in the centra. A very cool dude on a pushbike is exhibiting the peak of 1980s cycling culture at left by sitting back on his bike, hands free, with no helmet and basically no crash protection nor sun protection at all it seems.

Fonts are in the news, so I'm going to take the opportunity to port over an old thread: what was typography like in the Soviet Union? Spoiler: they did not just have 1 font everyone had to use. As a matter of fact, there were 39. One of them, you can see here, used to great effect for "Chernobyl."

The Simpsons “don’t make me tap the sign meme” comprising two images composited together; the upper image shows an illustrated cartoon bus driver is shown with the subtitle “don’t make me tap the sign” and the second lower image shows his hand pointing to a white sign inside the bus. Text had been added by the poster saying “When writing about Melbourne tram classes, a hyphen should not be used. e.g. the correct form is “W Class” not “W-class.” This applies both to the compound adjective and proper noun forms and is per longstanding Gov house style; Wikipedia is wrong.”

We often call better city-building ideas bold and visionary when they’re really just common sense given the real-life crises that cities are facing. But true common sense isn’t particularly common these days, so it’s considered bold.

Personally, though, I observe the Hutt rite, 14 April (1874, first steam train from Lowerer Hutt to Lower Hutt). Those who live in the Hutt Archipelago and believe that a mythical South Island exists observe 1 December (1863, a fable about a steam train in “Christchurch”, wherever that is)

I love 99% of this yarn from @australia.theguardian.com… except for the incorrect use of hyphens when referring to Melbourne tram classes. Per almost a century of longstanding style practice it is “E Class” not “E-class”; Wikipedia is wrong. I will not be taking further questions at this time
