In an effort to remind myself I’m not totally stuck in the past, I deleted 2/3 of my Discogs wishlist - anything prior to 1998 - and pulled together a collection of my favorite albums from this century. There’s still a handful of legacy artists, but most of them are new to the 2000s.

Happy “KISS Destroys Anaheim ‘76” Day to all who celebrate. This is their best live album - a band nearly at their peak, captured live, and not futzed with or re-recorded in any way. It’s high energy, warts and all. This is the band I fell in love with.

As an atheist who enjoys mid ‘80s Christian rock, this feels hypocritical to admit.

OK, so.

From 1983-1990 I listened to a lot of Christian rock. I was genuine in my faith and mistakenly thought everyone else was, too. There was some Amy Grant and Petra, but I didn’t really connect with the happy-clappy Jesus music written in a major key. I loved the dark underground stuff - punk, goth, new wave and synthpop coming out of Orange County. The themes were dark, asking big questions, expressing doubt, and longing for love and compassion.

Zondervan Family Bookstore was directly across the mall from Camelot Music, and each week I’d have to make a choice. Am I buying Duran Duran or Def Leppard, or am I buying Undercover or Steve Taylor?

This music was key during my formative years - and I stress MUSIC, because I’m not a lyrics person at all. I never listen to the words, the sound is what moves me.

I have a big collection of this stuff, and I’m going through my annual deep dive. That’s why I was thinking about Randy Wyatt the other day. Randy also loved this music, and on his last visit he asked me to burn all my albums to a DVD for him. I hope he enjoyed listening to them.

The Choir, Mad At The World, Adam Again, The 77’s, and even Stryper. I also roll in spiritually-adjacent bands like U2 and Simple Minds.

I know it’s lame, but I’m happy.
