we have 24 employees in I think 17 states and they’re all remote unless you count the coworking space in Pittsburgh where somebody goes once a week to get the mail

and that’s before you get in random local taxes that your payroll software may or may not know about / apply correctly

there’s so many little quirks in different places. if you have a single employee in New York you have to carry a special disability policy and family leave policy for them! if you have an hourly California employee their overtime is calculated differently! and on and on.

it really adds complexity! I have had the sad job of telling *several* tax prep clients that their out of state employer didn’t know it but they are subject to Louisville tax. that’s the first thing I checked for when I got my first paystub at this job.

yeah it’s a real pain and that’s even if you don’t find yourself getting a fine because you didn’t realize that new state had weird workers comp requirements or whatever (👋). employees moving without telling you is the worst, of course, for everyone because you get all the wrong taxes withheld etc

would have if I’d stopped and thought about it but until I worked in finance for a remote org I didn’t grasp all the little annoyances of having employees in multiple states and adding / removing states as personnel changes. I get why a lot of employers list jobs as remote within a certain state
