I would send you some, but I suspect that they would not be appreciated by the time they got there… Thankfully we just have to deal with rats/squirrels/raccoons/groundhogs here, not deer.

In good news, the indoor/outdoor plants are all weeded and hosed down, and we might even bring them inside sooner than “it’s dark and raining but it’s supposed to freeze tonight” (but let’s not be too hasty).

And that’s not counting all the cherry tomatoes that had split and fallen on the ground.

“It’s October in Massachusetts,” I said. “The garden will be slowing down,” I said. “Surely I can start harvesting twice a week instead of every two days.” Well.
A picture of a kitchen counter containing:
- Two overflowing pints of cherry tomatoes
- A colander containing at least another two pints of cherry tomatoes
- a small handful of yellow raspberries
- One very large beefsteak-style tomato
- Six medium-to-large tomatoes, partially ripe
- One lemon cucumber

We have *six days* left until the Academy of Natural Sciences, North America's oldest Natural History museum, is scheduled to close it's doors. Here are *six reasons* why we cannot - and will not- let that happen.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

We ate a lot of tongue that year. Tongue is delicious, as long as you don't think too hard about what those bumpy bits are. And I make sure to pick up some sliced tongue for my mom every year at Rein's New York Style Deli on Route 84, to be sure to prevent a re-occurrence.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
After several hours of phone calls, the tongue on the stove was ready to cool and peel, and we had arranged homes for almost all of the un-frozen tongues. Note: If you're going to freeze a tongue that large, cut it into chunks BEFORE it's a solid hunk.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
We gave a few -- or portions of one -- to folks mom knew who'd also grown up in the country. We gave one to the woman from the islands who was everybody's grandma. We gave one to the fellow who'd been in Denmark during WWII and was willing to eat pretty much anything.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
My mother also DOES NOT WASTE FOOD. There was no question of throwing out any of the tongues, or leaving them in the fridge until they went bad. Thus began the phone tree portion of the adventure.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
My mother is the sort of highly organized person who actually has empty space in her freezer, but she only managed to fit three or four of the tongues before she ran out of room. The box fit in the fridge, but there was no way we were going to eat the remainder before it spoiled.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
The other thing about tongue is that it is not a ready-to-eat meat. You need to boil it for an hour or more to soften it up, and then you need to peel the skin off. My mother hacked one in half with her largest knife, stuck the halves in her largest pot, and started boiling. Leaving us with 11 more

An aside, for those of you who have never personally encountered a beef tongue outside of the creature. Beef tongue is LARGE. I have since acquired tongues that were more reasonably sized, but each of these was at least as long as my shoulder to my wrist, and in most places bigger around.
100
Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
My mother gaped at it slightly, but she had, in fact, ordered it, and she really did want some tongue, so she forked over her $20 and asked me to carry the box to the car. It was HEAVY. When we got it home, we opened it up to find MANY beef tongues.

Saturday dawned, and we went back to the halal butcher, who pulled out not a single piece of meat, but a box. Folks, this box was nearly the size of a couch cushion. The ones you sit on. I may be misremembering slightly, but as I recall it was that tall, almost that wide, & about 2/3rds that deep.
100
Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Eventually, she struck gold at a halal butcher about a mile from out house. "I'm looking for beef tongue," my mom said, now a well-worn refrain. "I can order it," said the butcher. "Next Saturday. $20." Okay, my mom thought, they're good-sized, and it's a special order. She agreed.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
The local food co-op didn't have it and couldn't order it. (This is one of the few times that co-op has failed my mother.) None of the stores out in the country where my grandma lived had it. Mom took to roving the neighborhood, stopping at likely-looking meat establishments.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
So, my mom grew up eating tongue (pork and beef), and every so often she gets a hankering for it. One of these times occurred when I was about 14. Mom wanted tongue, and the farmers market that used to sell it didn't anymore, so she went on a hunt.

Miriam @3rdragon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Did I ever tell you all about the time my mom wound up with 12 or 14 beef tongues? (Also, if tongue meat grosses you out, this is a good time to mute me for a bit.)

HOLY SHIT DUDES fucking with the environment is now not just a sin (which Francis also said), it is classed as a direct fuck-you to God and a central tenet of the reasoning is the need to care for "our common home," i.e. you are morally obligated to think about the other people who also live here

Almost everything I grow is one food group. And that’s heavily weighted to the “veggies” part of “fruits and veggies.” Most years the bean harvest would not constitute a single serving of protein. I guess if I were better at catching rats and rabbits that could be additional protein…
