One of our members, @shannonkay.com, created a whole guide to making your very first website for her daughter. Turns out it can help all kinds of newbies with no experience get started in #webdev! Check out Shannon's Make Your Own Website step-by-step tutorial on how to make your first site:

This guide helps beginners get started making their first website with HTML/CSS. I originally wrote this for my daughter, then 12 years old, so she could make a website for a school project.

Turn your doomscrolling into bloomscrolling. Browse independent websites. Stop making billionaires richer by being addicted to their platforms. Don't lose your voice by handing over the entire internet. You don't even have to know how to code. You just have to be willing to try.

32-Bit Cafe @32bit.cafe · 08/02/2025

One way you can #fightback is by taking back the web. Don't let yourself be silenced in a sea of bots, trolls, or stuck in a doomscrolling loop. Constant scrolling is an easy way to control you. Create a website. Take your opinions there to widen your reach. Connect again w/the humanity of the web.

One of our members, ajazz, created a whole interactive guide to escaping the corporate social media machine: Unplatform. This is a great way to get introduced to the indieweb & the small web, if you've ever heard of it but not sure where to go from here. It's a fantastic read and full of resources.

It's human nature to be curious about how other people live, & it's one way to really get to know people that you don't have proximity to. Different opinions, lifestyles, music taste, aesthetic -- all of that can be shown through a personal website! You can really express yourself, your true self.

Make a personal website. It can be really simple! Do it for free at neocities.org! But have one of your very own that no one else controls. And start a newsletter. Make sure the service allows you to export and move your subscribers. Okay, now you have some independence and options.

I don’t think people understand how devastating the end of net neutrality, and consumer protections around internet connectivity, are going to be. Imagine the situation where you pay for 4 or 5 different streaming services, each with different “exclusives” — but for the Internet itself.

Or maybe you feel like it's time to have a place to just *be* yourself online. You publish, control, and share what you want. It's yours, and you control how people see and communicate with you, if you want to at all. It's your slice of the #internet, taking a piece back from #bigtech.

Being able to own your platform, your #writing published online, allows you to not just publish your work but also display it however you want.
