I don’t remember what camera that was I was using, it was a camera package for the video shoot, not one I regularly used. It was the first music video I directed, I wasn’t used to having fancy crew like a producer and DP (although I’d directed NIN’s “And All That Could Have Been” live DVD a few years prior, that was a DIY in-house project). Digital filmmaking with 24p mode (24 progressive frames per second, for a filmic look) was the new cinematography darling at that time, and the crew assumed that’s what we’d be filming in. The DP was baffled when I insisted that all the cameras film at 30i (30 interlaced frames per second, the old video / “amateur” look), and thought I must not know what I was talking about (understandable looking back at me now, I was baby!). But interlaced frames were essential to the aesthetic of the video I planned to bring out in editing, which involved digitally zooming/panning on footage that was incorrectly rendering the interlacing as progressive frames (creating the video’s horizontal lines that rip the image apart whenever there is movement). One of many examples from my career of trying to convince professionals that yes, I am purposely doing this the “wrong” way, trust me it will make sense later.
