The fact that The Thirteenth Year did not spawn an entire genre of merman-centric fiction is frankly a failure of humanity.

I wish people would stop using 'mermaid' as the catch-call for all mythical sea people, regardless of gender. It's not that hard to write merman, merwoman, merboy, etc... There's a reason for merMAID, a young possibly inexperienced woman.

A preview image showing to snazzily dressed people. The figure on the right is dressed in a purple pinstripe suit, and the figure on the right wears a glittery red dress and cools herself with a peacock-feather fan. From what's visible of their necks, it seems neither figure is human, as the man on the right seems to have the head of a snake, while the woman on the right appears to have the head of some kind of bear or other large mammal.

A sketch of Hector, Cassie's father, dressed in his signature yellow swimsuit. 💪 Until recently, Cassie and Odys were the only characters from 21 Bottles I’d ever drawn before, so even this simple sketch was a bit of a foray into the unknown. I'm excited to share more concept art with you all soon!

A drawing of a man from the waist-up dressed in a classic yellow swimsuit. He has dark, short hair and a scraggly beard, posed with his hand on his hip as he scratches the back of his head to look at something off-screen. He is rather muscular, with strong arms and defined pecs, but with a bit of a tummy bulging over his waistband in an attractive, controlled manner.

Get to know Odys, the deuteragonist of 21 Bottles!

A miniature biography of Odys. His age is 15/16 and he hails from Astarias. His biography reads as follows:

"A charming young merman who wants everything around him to be beautiful.

Odys hates being on land. Up, down, left, right — who cares? It’s all the same when you’re stuck on the same beach day after day. At least some of the outfits Cassie wears down to shore are stylish enough... You know, maybe there’s some inspiration to be taken from Odys’ terrestrial trek after all?"

Get to know Cassie, the main character of 21 Bottles!

A miniature biography of Cassandra "Cassie" Watanabe. Her age is 12/13 and she hails from Meridian City. Her biography reads as follows:

"A precocious young girl with a penchant for reading and learning new things. She does not hesitate to take initiative, but is quick to defer responsibility — and blame — to those around her when things get tough.

Since meeting Odys, Cassie has resolved to help the lost merboy find his way home. But does she really have what it takes to let him go?"

It’s Fan Art Friday, the day where I share artwork inspired by my upcoming comic, 21 Bottles! 🧜‍♂️💫 Today, we have a piece by @butter-mood.bsky.social of the main character of 21 Bottles, Cassie! Thank you so much for this adorable portrait and for your enthusiastic support of 21 Bottles!

A portrait of Cassandra "Cassie" Watanabe, the main character of 21 Bottles. She is a young girl of about 12 or 13 years, with short, black hair, blunt bangs, and sparkling brown eyes. She wears a red beret on her head and is dressed in a cream-colored polo shirt and short overalls overlain with the image of a pond full of fish and lily pads.

An illustration featuring a close-up portrait of a young girl, Cassie, in monochromatic blue in the background with a merboy, Odys, in monochromatic yellow trapped in a green wine bottle hovering in the foreground. Cassie is looking wistfully over her shoulder to the right while Odys bangs his fists against the glass of the wine bottle, desperate to escape.
