I’m amused that you call mathematicians regular people. Most mathematicians I have known have been interestingly weird.

It’s officially autumn and I’m roasting coffee. The shortening of the days is a little intimidating but the cooler weather is welcome. I mowed the lawn today in advance of the wet weather predicted for the weekend.

I hear it’s #fossilfriday and we recently went to Florida, mostly to look for fossils. (Yep, got some shark teeth.) We did some beach combing in between scheduled activities and found these lovely little oysters.
Four small (1-2 cm) oyster fossils on a black fabric background. One has a barnacle, another has a clam and another half oyster shell on it.

I recently got back from vacation in Florida and I really enjoyed watching the dock pets. I’m more used to egrets being silent hunters than greedy beggars.
Two pilings at a dock; the near one has a great egret standing on it and the far one has a snowy egret. A great blue heron is standing in the water some distance away.

I’m sitting here by the marsh. The tide is high and the egrets are standing around in the sun, preening. Earlier when it was low, the yellowlegs were running across the mud and eeping.

These are about 70 million years old. The oyster is likely agerostera mesenterica. The brachiopod is likely choristothyris plicata.

Here are a few more views showing both sides of the shells. Our guides said these brachiopods are normally thicker. This one may have been compressed at some point.

I love museums! The Monmouth Museum hosted a fossil hunting trip yesterday and I had so much fun. Here are my two amazing finds, an oyster and a brachiopod.
Two fossils above a ruler on a desk. One is an oyster about 2.5 cm long with a distinctly curved shell and very ruffled edges. The second is a brachiopod about 1.5 cm across that looks similar to a scallop.

The beaver was not pleased we were there. It sounded an alarm with its tail and then swam parallel to the trail monitoring us until we were out of range. I’m a little sorry we upset it but it was magical to witness.

Yesterday we went for a walk after the volunteer dinner at Teatown Lake Reservation where I am a nature guide. We saw a beaver, a couple of great blue herons, a duck family, a turtle, fish, deer, a green frog, and so many wood frogs that we stopped counting. It was absolutely delightful.
