Years ago I worked on Sun workstations, with bigass B&W CRT monitors, and I made a little collection of monochrome bitmaps to use as tiled backgrounds. Later on I got color displays (probably on linux by then) then I kept using them setting fg and bg color for a […] [Original post on sfba.social]

@drmike I see this. There is admittedly blank space on both sides. But in the middle I can see newer posts, and I still have place to write whatever I want to the left. Has the UI changed for you?

@toxi The need for a globally unique name is a high bar. Suppose you and your friends form a band, and pick a cool name. Pre-internet, if some other band in another city randomly had the same name, no big deal. Probably neither band is ever going to get famous anyway. And if one of them actually […]

They were cool. First of all lots of different hobbies. Trains, R/C cars and boats, really random model kits (like silly 50s scifi spaceships), dollhouses, cross-stitching, beads, general crafts, you name it. And they they had a ton of old stock around. I picked up some #modeltrain layout […]

I was looking for some glue and found this one. The Hobby House has been gone a couple years. I miss those guys. During the 2020 lockdown, they did walkup sales at their door. Couldn't browse, but if you needed glue or paint or something you could describe, you could get it.

‘Medieval romance overflowed with sexually active fairies’: the surprisingly long roots of romantasy
Critics mock romantasy as raunchy trash – but this enchanting genre has its roots in medieval literature, and is much older, and wilder, than you might imagine

Biked around 3rd St & Bayview in SF (a neighborhood I was advised to keep out of as a kid). Saw some neat stuff.
The front part of this house looks like a 1906 earthquake shack.Nicely painted little truck. Back door has a chill lion smoking something. Seems to say Dzyer. The last of Muni's Breda LRVs, on the dead line in the 3rd St yard.A tarped Milano.

A neighbor (well, originally I thought of her as "my neighbor's kid" but she's in her 20's now) had a job at a summer camp in the area so we chatted about what's in Pescadero. It's a small place so if you mention "the store" or "the coffee shop" it's unambiguous. Anyway she mentioned that they […]

An old bus that's slightly pink. I don't think on purpose, I think the paint has just faded this way.Front end of the same bus. Fairly flat front. One corner has a railroad-style marker light.

This is a cutdown #SFMuni Mack. It used to run up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower. There were 3 of these and this is the last one left. Here's some info about Muni Macks: www.streetcarmike.com/muni_mack.html (including a picture of this bus in service).
An old-fashioned looking bus in the red-and-orange Landor livery, with the classic Muni Worm logo. It's bus #2617.

In Williams, CA, there's a "bus graveyard". The owner was around and I chatted a bit. If you have a really old bus, this is the place to find parts for it.

Two of BART's predecessors: a "Bridge Unit" (these once ran over the Bay Bridge) and an East Bay trolley.

Developed and scanned my latest roll of film from the #KodakBrownie. I get 8 shots per roll. It's 7 trains and 1 cat. I visited the Western (Electric) Railway Museum (near Rio Vista, CA) last weekend. They have some of the original BART fleet trains on display now. #SFBART

This locomotive has not been repainted since at least 1996 (when the SP, of which the SSW was a subsidiary, was merged into the UP). #southernpacific #ssw en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Louis_Sou…
A paint-peeling and graffitied diesel up on a viaduct in San Carlos, CA.It's lettered (in peeling letters) "Cotton Belt" which was an SP subsidiary (officially St Louis Southwestern, or SSW). It follow the late SP ¨bloody nose" pattern of being dark gray/dusty black except for a bright red splotch on the front. This one has a yellow stripe under the cab window for it's official post-merger UP numbering (but even that is peeling).Heading northward with a cut of hoppers.

I think I'm going to have to make a memorial ride on the F-Line: Castro & Market all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. And walk over to the Buena Vista for an Irish coffee. (Not sure that he was particularly a fan of those, but it's a quintessentially SF thing to do and I could use one).
