FCC floats censoring LGBTQ+ and other "controversial issues" on TV. In schools and museums, "controversial issues" has meant blocking discussion of race, gender, sexuality, bodily autonomy and political issues. In other words, remaking broadcast to match Christian Nationalist ideology.
Years ago, Congress passed a law that empowers parents to decide the types of TV programs that are appropriate for their kids by standing up a TV show ratings system.
But recently, parents have raised concerns with the industry's approach
— including with ratings creep.
Specifically, they argue that New York & Hollywood programmers are promoting controversial issues in kids programming without providing any transparency or disclosures to parents.
This undermines the whole point of the law and the ratings system parents rely on.
The FCC is now seeking comment on whether the industry's approach provides parents with the types of information and disclosures relevant to them today.

Republicans know exactly what they’re doing. And the only reason these AV laws pass with bipartisan support is because the Democrat party is full of reactionary, uncurious, disengaged cowards.
“[We] came up with an idea on pornography to make it so that the porn companies [must implement age verification, and] what happens is the porn company then says, were not going to do business in your state, which of course is entirely what we were after.
So we are doing it from the back door, we're starting with the kids, and then we'd have a national ban on pornography if we could.”

Visa and Mastercard already control almost all of what can be sold online — and thus who gets to speak. But with Mastercard's participation in the Online Safety Act, and an initiative to become an age-verification solution, that power could grow exponentially. www.mastercard.com/news/perspec...
Text from Mastercard release (2024): Mastercard already helps merchants and financial institutions assess risk through attributes like name and payment information as we enable billions of digital interactions around the world, instilling trust in the digital economy. Now, thanks to new EMVCo industry specifications and Mastercard's Identity Attribute Verification service, issuers will soon be able to confirm cardholders' additional attributes, such as their age, date of birth or address.
Using the technology behind a payment card, our solutions will allow our partners to seamlessly verify that a consumer meets the criteria for certain goods and services while protecting their privacy. Doing so eliminates the often cumbersome task of uploading documents like photo ID, proof of residency or passport.

Microsoft and other platforms are signaling that they will willingly comply with increasingly invasive government surveillance mandates in order to keep access to the market. There's no reason they would comply with this, but not something more nefarious. news.xbox.com/en-us/2025/0...
As this age verification process rolls out across the UK, we’ll continue to evaluate how we can keep players around the world safe and learn from the UK process. We expect to roll out age verification processes to more regions in the future. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to player safety, so these methods may look different across regions and experiences. We’ll work with local communities, publishing partners and regulators to determine the right approach that both respects player privacy and doesn’t take away from the Xbox gameplay experience. We’ll continue to communicate the changes we’re making to our practices and the data we collect so we can better protect players on our platform.
